Friends say buds have certain smell to them...

I've grown for a few years and am pretty experienced I'd say. I grow in hydro and follow typical dry/cure practices. I've had multiple people tell me that my buds, no matter the strain or if i grew it this year or two years ago, have a certain smell to them along with their own signature smells. They say it has a sort of potpourri type smell and taste.

My dry and cure goes as usual, harvest, trim, hang dry in tent at 55-60% RH for 5-10 days until small stems snap. Jar them up and burp daily then weekly as they go with constant RH monitoring. They will then stay in jars, if a friend is having some it will go in a bag for first time and to them. I wonder if maybe because my friends never experience truly "fresh" only bagged once bud that its just that causing the difference to them? Or has anyone experienced this issue and found what was causing it?

Now sometimes I will use Boveda packs to correct RH in jars, I've read rumors of Boveda affecting smell before so just throwing that out there if that's been seen to cause this.

I have found boveda packs to me at least alter the smell to some degree. If was to take a guess It is the natural quality of salts they use. However I do in fact still use them for long term storage regardless.

It's hydro dude.. Your nutes are designed with the scent in them. You been using the same nutes. Give up the fake gimmick sauce and let the microbes do the real smellies. I bet you dont even know what your strains actually smell like naturally, without the potpourri inducing nutes.. If you grow in Arizona and your "friends" are thousands of cardholders I guarantee you its your nutes. The shit smellz like cheap body wash, rejected Mexican air freshener scents and bowling alley shoe sprays around here. That ain't weed terps.

are you an ass in every thread you post in?
you might be on to something, but who's going to listen to you when you're an insulting ass when you say it?

You know that flowers naturally can small floral, right? It's even in the name. You know what potpourri is? It's flowers!! Really think about this one.

Hydroponics is a bunch odorless white salts and one orange salt.... I wouldn't use fragrances in my mixes...

or maybe im just some loser that grows some pot in his basement...i appreciate the comment tho!
Have you been to a local cannabis dispensary to smell and sample the competition? Is a 'legal' state close enough for you to go do some scratching and sniffing?

Without smell-o-vision, it's hard for us to determine what smell your friends might be smelling. Maybe you need new friends?

Seriously, come to the next RIU cookout and compare notes. You'll get invaluable information that will take away all the guesswork.

OP I know what you're talking about, but I have not quite put my finger on it.

I've been to two local dispensaries who have a large variety of strains. I know one dispensary produces their own, and I highly believe the second one also produces their own. I'd say 80-90% of their strains (I guess, what they do not out-source) all have a similar smell and colour tinge to them, in addition to what the original strain should smell like.

I always chalked it up to something went wrong with the nutrient feed schedule, flushing or drying. It is possible it's just a bad pheno.

@RegularOrMenthol? I both agree and disagree. I've seen some insanely good bud grown in basic GH nutes, side-by-side with some nice organic you would not be able to tell the difference.

I mean I notice the smell when my buds are still in their jars, they have that herby smell until you put em in a bag for a bit then it reaks like skunk as normal. I never notice the smell and taste that is mentioned to me, I'm probably used to it since i smoke it every day.

I have a buddy who's been growing for 40 years and runs a legal operation and I honestly don't notice a difference between his and mine yet my brother can notice that mine is different with that certain whatever that gets noticed from mine. Who knows, it's not a big deal by any means, i'm just curious.

I've also had comments on folks noticing that my bud is way fresher, so I wonder if it's just that my bud hasn't been sitting around in a bag for months being transported and shit so everyone round here is used to that vs mine. I don't live where buds being legally acquired.

Yeah it's odd, maybe it is the nutrients and hydro method and it's just the fact that everyone getting my bud isn't used to it. Thousands of growers use the identical nutrients and hydroponic method as me, even on RUI alone there are tons of growers doing the same thing as me so it's not like I'm doing something wrong there.

Personal I believe it's in the handling of the buds. I store mine in jars too and if a friend is taking some home it goes into a baggie. That's where it gets banged around squashing trichomes and releasing a lot more intense odors.

I've grown clones from the same mother using my regular AN nutes on one and General Organics GoBox organic nutes and the only difference myself and friends I had test both could find was the AN pile was lot bigger.

Organics has to break stuff down into the same salts that come in bottles of hydro nutes for the plants to be able to use it. The hydro nutes just cut out the middle man.

To the more sophisticated nose and palate the organic for sure is going to have subtle differences but when you just want lots of medicine then hydro is the way to go.

I don't think it's that they're not used to it, quite the opposite actually. (First) if they say it tastes or smells funny... there probably is something funny there. Then, they are probably just so used to smoking unclean herb.

I might be crazy, but I can almost "taste" like some kind of RO-Water like taste mixed in the palate when a bud is nice and clean when vaping. Versus when it's not, there will be a taste similar to what your nutrients actually smell like when you open the bottle and take a wiff, or a chlorophyll-y taste if it was not cured correctly. Sometimes people will give me a look but I always notice those little differences.
