I was searching online for a reasonalbe priced source for some more lights and ballasts. I ran Into a website called 1000bulbs.com It has almost everything you would need for lighing, ballasts, bulbs. There prices are Cheap, Cheap, Cheap. I picked up a brand spanking new HPS 1000watt ballast and bulb for, $146 dollars. Some assembly required. It didnt have a reflector, but I can make one out of aluminum and Mylar, or pick one up else where. I'm sure all the Experiance light shoppers on here, already know about this website, but this is for all us newbees who are or were using CFL's cause we didn't want to lose our shirts paying for HID lighing. Check them out. they also sell 150 and 200 watt CFLs which let out between 8000 and 10000 lumens each.

listed them myself not too long ago.

A++ service too.

I order from them and I'm happy with the results. I mean it wasn't as pretty as the other ballast I bought from HG Supply or whatever there name is. But, those who need a good looking ballast shouldn't. Whey would you show off your ballast, no one should know your growing anyway. It was a simple set up, attach the lamp, put on a cord and thats that. Plus, the 400watt bulb was only like 10 dollars with shipping. Can't beat that.

yep but thats also a regular hps bulb. No added blue spectrum like those expensive whor-t-lux thingys.
they work fine for growing though.

i never bought an hid ballast from them, they were still pretty expensive with hid when i was ordering bulbs and shit from them. (or i would have picked up another hps too)

Ya, your right. It has 50,000 lum. I have a special grow bulb which is also 400w hps and it has 55,000 lum. They are hooked up next to each other and look exactly the same when lit. One bulb is more straight and the other has a slight bow in the middle...
they both do the trick though. for $65 I may pick up another. I have a 400w MH conversion bulb, might as well not waist it. That would give me 1200 watt. Not bad I guess.

pssst a normal mh bulb will run in a hps ballast its just that the ignitor burns out the bulb a lil quicker. who cares though dfor the price 1000bulbs has em thats still like 2times cheaper than a conversion bulb........

Thants a great piece of info. I could buy a couple, just to have on hand if one goes out... I actually have an abundance of light bulbs though. I had 2 each HPS and MH now I bought that new ballast and 2 more HPS, Because they were so cheap. So that gives me 4 hps and 2 mh. I'm only running one light now because, It gets way to hot with both on.. Any Ideas?

The problem is that, now they are in a closet. My basement growroom was way to humid (couldn't get it below 65 RH). The closet only has room on one side for fans, so I cant get the hot air out quick enough. I blow a few occelating fans at the plants, and two 4" fans blow on the light. with only the one light on, I can hardly keep it below 80 deg. With 2 lights it's was always over 85 and they hated it. They would start drooping about an hour after lights on. within 2 hours from the time I turned off the second light, they were back up and looking good. What do think?

new to the whole HPS deal and wondering how many bulbs fit in a ballast.. 2 isnt it?

depends on the ballst. most are only strong enough to pull one bulb. However i think you could put 2 sockets on a 400watt ballast and run like 2 200watt hps bulbs on it. there are some that will run a hps bulb and a mh bulb @ the same time too on 2 different sockets.

just depends on what you want. But using more bulbs is better in the long run even if they all equal up to the same amount of wattage because there are more light sources from 2 bulbs in comparison as to 1.

That is true. Many years ago I had a 1000watt ballast, and had 2 400 watt MH lights on it. I don't know what the other 200watt was doing, but the bulbs worked fine. I only used them for 9 months to a year. It was for a Saltwater reef aquarium. I think that using bulbs that are too small for the ballast (like a 200w bulb in a 400w ballast) could either blow out the bulb right away or take many hour off the life of the bulb. I don't know what would happen the other way (400w bulb and 200w ballast) I would assume the bulb would work, but at a decreased output.

You could run a 400w MH conversion bulb and 400w hps bulb, along with another 200w hps bulb, in a 1000w ballast, by conecting 3 sockets to the ballast. It shouldn't give any problem, as long as the watts add up. An electrician probibly wouldn't advise this though. I

I would stick with just 1 400w HPS bulb. Since you can only run the same wattage as the ballast itself, I wouldn't suggest splitting bulbs on only 400w. You will get just about the same coverage with one 400w bulb as you would with two 200w bulbs. If you do decide to split it with two bulbs, you need to Make sure you buy a 2 HID sockets, insted of one. You will also need a Cord with only two prongs, no ground... Wireing it is easy. Get the 5tap ballast (the one in the middle). Order atleast 1 extra bulb. Get the midgrade HPS bulb (5000 lums). If you want to pick up a 400 MH as well, I should work with that ballast.

Either get: 400w 5 tap ballast, 1 400w bulb (1 xtra bulb), 1 HID socket and a power cord.
Or you can get, 400w 5 tap ballast, 2 bulbs (plus xtra), 2 HID sockets and a power cord.

These lights do not come with Reflectors... Ebay has some good ones.. Also, check HTG supply

I ordered a 150w HPS bulb from HTGSupply

1000bulbs.com is about a better deal, but more assembly required~

which mh bulb works best from this site for a 1000w? I can't tell.
Go with this one:
1000 Watt - Metal Halide - 4200K - Clear - MH1000/BT56/U/4K - Plusrite #M10009261402

For the money you can't beat it. Although, the Most expensive one, is higher in Lums

after reading mogi's DIY HPS MH ballast, i think i'll just do a mini SOG with cfl's for the bitch, and then 2 ballasts, one for each box... and build them myself..... electrocutions fun!!!!
