I'm new to the whole concept but have been reading and, Wow... This site is full of great info. Anyway, I'm trying to figure out a few things. One of which is my best and most economical route with the equipment I have, what I need to change and what I need to buy. It's a fairly small project and the pockets are not the deepest but I wouldn't mind paying someone to consult via phone as well.
I have been using RSO which ends up as black tar. I started with everclear and now trying isopropyl 99%.
From there I have the basic 2L short path system (yes, from china). I tried to cut corners with the chiller and bought a chiller that is used for laser engraving. Little did I know the max temperature is 40 degrees celcius and I need 40-60 from what I've read. Seems I need a heater instead because tap water and room temp is lower than that range. Am I correct in my thought? I also didn't opt yet for the welch at $1500 and instead got a 1hp 2 stage vacuum pump that pulled my system down to -30 inhg on the gauge. Problem with it is that it needs to be outside and piped in as I learned in my first attempt... ughhh, but not anything I can't fix or change if recommended. I also have a buchner funnel and charcoal / celite 545.
I put in 42 grams of RSO and followed instructions from bestvaluevacs website. (I have also watched numerous Summit youtube videos along with many others.) I heated the mantle slowly and it took awhile for I got a reaction about 170-180 for first fraction then changed to (cow) flask #2 and raised the temperature. it started out fine and then my stir bar stopped spinning. I got what I could but still feel like there was plenty more I could have gotten. The bottom of my 2l boiling flask seems to be scorched so I'm having a hard time cleaning it. I think that is why the stir bar stopped. I'm soaking the 2l flask in isopropyl on the mantle with gentle heat and stir bar. I barely got any clear. guessing 5-6 ml and it's not exactly honey.
Obviously I need a mentor/consultant and/or any input or advice I can get. I am trying to fill a few cartridges.
