flat iron/hair straightner extraction method

I'm looking for some experienced fellow growers who use this method to gather personal amounts of concentrates.

disclaimer... I know there are far superior ways to obtain concentrated via BHO and C02 extraction, that being said I'm interested in this method right now as I am just stepping into the concentrate game and want to start slow and not blow myself up.

thanks in advance!!

I've heard of this, but not ever seen it done. I think maybe wax paper is used to do this. I'm curious myself, anyone ever done this? How exactly?

Didn't work for sheet with me when I tried it a couple of years ago. Just fuxed up some buds honestly.

The method that worked involves a hydraulic press and way too much effort imo.

Good luck.

Just take a nug about .2g, put in betweeen parchment paper(not wax). Turn on flat iron, if you have a meat thermometer probe put it between the flat iron plates. Wait until it gets to about 180-190, remove thermo, insert bud and parchment, Squeeze/press down hella tight for about 20-30 secs. Presto, you have rosin.
That's the quick rosin tec version.

It does take a bit of trial and effort if you are going the hair iron route. Nugs can't be bigger than your plates when squished, hence the .2g reference. The wider the plates on the hair iron the better.
I've upgraded from hair iron and a hand clamp to a press and press plates. easy peasy.

how much was your setup?

how much was your setup?
20 ton press w/gauge $179.00(sale at northern tool free shipping)
3×5" rosin press plate kit $200 ish dollars.
Rosin bags $40.00 (variety pack)
Parchment paper $3.00
Candy thermometers x2 $8.00
Just under $450.00
There are cheaper diy options as well as press options. There are also more expensive options as well.
I have yet to go over 2000 psi on my plates with my bags and tec.

If you do decide to try it out using a flat iron/hair straightner, I suggest getting a hand clamp. I detached the plate from tge flatiron and rigged them to this images.jpg
Much easier than simply using hand pressure and or body weight.

editted for mistakes.

You use parchment paper and not wax paper. There is a difference. Please do not use wax paper.

It’s quite easy to do. Put your flat iron to a mild heat setting. About 200C. Or 210. A lot of you tube videos on it.
Yep.Wax very very bad. Parchment good! Lol you tube good!

When I first started I used a clamp like pictured above and did okay but one day I grabbed a pair of 20" channel locks out of the tool box and that definitely upped the game. I really enjoy pressing some kief that way. Make a little pouch out of an unbleached coffee filter if you end up trying that.

Pressing kief is unreal and good use for it.

I've used a hair straightener to press small amounts at home. I took the straightener apart and attached the irons (via jb weld) to a small bench vice . At the lowest setting it's around 180ish degrees. Place a small nug in a piece of parchment, close the vice and squish. I'll go for 2 minutes or so. I haven't tried it with any rosin bags, so I still get particles, but it's not that bad, and they can be picked out for the most part. The vice I already had, so only cost was the straightener. I do plan to upgrade, but I still use this one occasionally.

I use a pollen press to squeeze 2 to 3 grams into a puck, then I put it between a piece of parchment paper, don't use wax paper, I then place it into the flat iron, Wich is pre heated. I then place that into a vice and put just enough pressure to hold the iron secure. As soon as I see it bubble I add more pressure. Once I get to where I can't tighten it anymore I wait until it stops bubbling, remove and enjoy.
