ok so I just filled my 7gal smart pot about 1/2 way with SS and the top 1/2 with FFOF and planted my 2 week old baby girl, my question is am I to water with strait tap water or do I PH it ?

I use Distilled water, the store I buy it from has it's ph at 6.2 and the soil adjusts to its preferred PH. x)

I would get some PH test strips and check your tap water. You can get them at a pet store in the aquarium section and many other places. Test you water once or twice per year as it may change seasonally. If the PH is not too high (under 7?), just use it straight. I try to let mine sit for a couple of days to let the chlorine evaporate. I also add 1/4 tsp of molases, which is supposed to rapidly remove chlorine and chloramine. However, in warm weather you need to smell the water before use to make sure it has not gone anaerobic from the molases. Happend to me a few times during the unusually hot June we had here.

if you have city water you can rely on just testing it occasionally, if you run from a well or stream then you will want to check it every watering.

I run from a live stream and just have a constant readout ph/temp/ppm @ my res. it's made a difference in my gardening for sure because I deal w/ ph flux all the time.

Remeber, Dolomite lime will raise your PH easily and only lower it to a point, be cautious of high ph waterings.

yes you definitely need to use 6.0-6.5 PH water. I use tap water but i adjust the PH to 6.5 everytime

I really think it depends on your water supply, as geekmike said. There are a lot of people growing in soil who never PH and still get good results (including me). Take a look in the main organic forum. First step is to test the water and see what you got to work with.

I just want to add that I used to grow in coco and one of my favorite things about growing in Super Soil is not having to bother with my PH pen, calibration fluids, and PH down anymore. Partly that is because I'm lucky to have good tap water and partly it is because good soil self corrects.

Ive found even if you have good water, the PH will fluctuate during different parts of the year. At least with my water, which is city water. My tap usually runs from 20-30 PPM. Thats why i use it. But during the winter, the PH of my water is around 8.0-8.5 and during the summer it goes down to about 6.5 .. not really sure why. I check my PPMs all the time and it does not fluctuate very much. So i think either way, if you dont know the PH of your water, it is important to check it at least once in a while. Just how ive always done it.
