First Time Hydro Grow

First time growing hydroponically, have grown a couple of times in soil and turned out well, but ready for a new challenge. Have read up on most everything, and am somewhat confident about everything, except for one simple, most likely stupid, area: changing the nute solution. I'll be using a top-feed DWC system, but I guess I'm curious on how to actually go about changing the water. Like, where should I put the tray that the plants are in while changing my water? Is it ok to keep the lights on, or should the roots be exposed to as little light as possible when changing? Plus, the tray will be connected with the water pump in my reservoir as well since it's a top-fed system, do I need to disconnect that as well?? Any help on the subject is greatly appreciated, I'm dying to start this whole process but don't want to until I'm 100% sure I know what to do.
