Hello all this is my first post, trying to figure out how many weeks I have left. Ive been doing tons of reading(mainly when im bored at work:p) and have heard to many different things to know what to do. I have inspected the trichomes using a pair of binoculars backwards, all I have at this point. To me they look 90% cloudy and 5% clear and 5% amber. Im sorry about the question thats asked a million times. Just trying to figure it out so I have room for my white rhino :)

sorry dude but that bud looks rather young...not sure if your backward binoculars are providing an accurate assessment of the trichromes

....how long have you been in the flower mode?

I switched 12/12 a little over 7 weeks ago. I trust you more than I do my bs way at looking at trics lol. Gonna pick up a 60x glass this weekend. Hopefully that will do a better job. I think im just excited to get this first flower out of the way so I can flower my white rhino and atomic bomb plants that are in the veg room.

I switched 12/12 a little over 7 weeks ago.
You switched 7wks ago but the plant dose NOT start flowering right away.
That plant is more like a month into flower, you got quite a bit of time left probably another month.

Oh and I dont think your binocular method is working, not a chance are they cloudy or amber.

Alright. Thanks for the advice Budfever and Indoor sun. I have no problem waiting. Ill put up more pictures of my other plants and if you guys have the chance let me know how they look.

Hey guys, finally off work so time to take some new pictures of the girls. Enjoy and let me know what you think:)

I have three other plants including the original one I posted above that I will put up pics in a few min after I eat some food and hit the bong.

  • Harvesting your weed based on trichomes is probably the easiest way for most growers to harvest as close to peak harvest as possible. However this should not be the only factor in which you determine if your buds have reached full maturity or not. The overall look of your buds should be full and plump, the white hairs should have turned amber and mostly recessed into the plant.

The difficulty in the method comes with how to determine the state of the trichomes and what each state means.
If you have the equipment needed it is however very easy and with experience it gets even easier.

To explain how to harvest by trichomes properly I will go into detail as to how to determine when trichomes are at their peak and which substances these trichomes contain, which are desirable and which are not.

The first thing you need to know is that there are 3 "states" in a trichomes development.

The first state is clear. Clear trichomes contain precursor cannabinoids (cannabinoids are the different substances in cannabis).
These precursor cannabinoids are not psychoactive (they do not produce a 'high') yet and harvesting clear trichomes will not give you a proper harvest.

The second state is cloudy/milky. Cloudy trichomes contain fully realized THC (the by far main contributing substance in any cannabis high).
You want to get as close to 100% cloudy trichomes @ harvest to get the most potency out of your plant. It's impossible to get 100% cloudy trichomes, since trichomes are always being produced and are always maturing, even after harvest the trichomes will continue to develop.

The third state is amber. Amber trichomes contain degraded THC --> CBN. CBN represents a loss of 90% potency (from THC).
CBN is not desirable in any harvest, since it not only represents a huge loss of potency but research into the substance has also shown that CBN does not produce a high like THC does, CBN produces a more sickly feeling not a true high.

Understanding the difference between clear - cloudy - amber trichomes is essential in getting a proper harvest with a peak potency.

Thanks for the info Hank. If I can find a way to get a picture of the trichomes I will upload it. I must be thinking they are cloudy when clear. Some of the hairs have turned brown just about 10% though.

7 weeks from 12/12 switch, just some random seed I got out of a bud.1st ever plant. I over nuted it also but I believe but I think I did better with the other plants, so ill just chalk that up as a learning experience. .

This is another bag seed that has been switched to 12/12 about 4 weeks ago.

Finally this is white rhino#2 (I need some better names guys). Tonight will be its first night of 12/12. It was vegged for 5 weeks and is just shy of 20 inches tall.

Well thats all for now. Let me know if you have any questions, also feel free to post and suggestions you guys have for me.

Bless

As sunking had already said, it looks like you have a good ways to go until harvest. I'd say 4 more weeks at the least.
you should start checking trichs once you see the calyxs start to swell and see the hairs receding into the bud.
Should start a grow journal. I'll be there for the ride.

Alright sounds good to me. I'll start one up and go into more detail on what im doing. Will post the link once I get it up and ready :). Thanks for the support Crankyxr. Gonna start working on it now :)
