First Garden - Suggestions

Corn takes up a lot of room for little product & you have to grow a few rows of it so it cross pollinates. Unless you have a a big garden I wouldn't mess with corn. I grow a 25 foot by 50 foot plot. I suggest tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, basil, leaf lettuce yellow squash & zucchini. All of these are easy to grow except peppers. They can be a challenge even though I have never had much problem with them. Just make sure you space your plants out properly so they have room to grow & keep them weeded. Good luck!

for your first garden id run some basic stuff.. sunni gave you a nice list. i grow a lot of herbs and tomatoes and shit. cucumbers, peppers, lettuce.. i grow stuff i actually eat. this year i want to try pickling the cucumbers i grow.. see what i can come up with

Rosemary will last the winter and repell sone insects. Also cover the smell of any questionable plants that might be attending your services. I like to grow things i eat the most of. For instance, i eat kale almost every day. Blend it up in a smoother. Also, Swiss chard, mints, oregano, cabbage, pepper varieties that i cant find at the store, cherry tomatoes, and Squashes too! Watermelons. Don't over plant and get some row covers when you can. If you're organic you'll either have to have perfect plants to repell insects or some barrier. What i mean by that is insects won't touch textbook healthy plants but will destroy plants with flaws. As a begginer, youll have tomato worms, stem burrowers, and whatever else sees your plot from above or my already live nearby. The best bet is a barrier sheet or shade netting. Good luck

A large weedy garden will produce much less than a small weed free garden.

The skeleton under the netting is wire fencing that came in a large spool. Tbh i found the spool in the woods when i moved here but i need more and found some at Lowe's for 7$ a section.

I was going to use a lot of neem also :) Probably apply at sundown
Never got around to a decent pest repellent like neem except shaving my beard and during an internship where we had 5-10 year old neem trees. The process was to climb the tree, cut off lower branches (which is counter intuitive, why not bush the plant by chopping the top?) and steep the leaves in cheep rum with peppers, onions, moringa, and any other antioxidants. But that was in the middle of the pacific ocean where thst kinda thing would grow year round.

Grow as many herbs and spices as your space allows, the rest of your garden will thank you. Depending on your diet and space, you can grow quite a lot of diverse plants. I'm partial to vine plants like tomatoes, melons, etc as you can grow them vertically very tall. Root veggies are a staple; potatoes, onions, carrots, etc. I grow a few heirloom corn varieties, if you want to grow only a few corn plants just pollinate them yourself, obviously you'll have to grow enough to support a healthy pollination but you don't need rows and rows. Grow some heirloom comfrey, it's a beautiful plant and it's a staple in permaculture gardens for the most part. Very versatile and useful.
