First DIY 100w Cob Setup

People get so stuck on brand names sometimes.
#Random. #NonConformist
I don't know who said anything about people being snobs for using quality chips.
And now you know why I mentioned snobbery. Fucking "brand name". Or in @ScaryGaryLed 's words "higher end brands". Like we are buying Grape-nuts instead of Nutty Nuggets, and not using a coupon to boot.

Listen, I love Nutty Nuggets, but unlike Nutty Nuggets cheap LEDs are in no way equivalent to their name-brand counterparts, they are just vaguely cob-shaped Chinese poop that nobody should buy.

Nutty Nuggets.

I like that discount malt o meal sheet that costs the same as higher price ones.
Listen maybe it came off dickish and I get you are steering him to a better option.

I don't see why it's such a big deal about what someone uses if it works for them. I'm testing out a cheap cob on a micro grow that was originally only going to be 111 watts/approx. 7k lumens with some cfls. Popping this "cheap" cob is an easy way, although not the most efficient, to boost those lumens to about 14-15k for a cylindrical grow space with an 11" diameter and a max light height of about 1' 2". I promise everyone, I will get top bin chips for my "normal," in a regular grow room grow, so don't you worry!
I have it wired and ready to install, probably tomorrow or the next day. It's super fucking bright compared to any other light I've used, and the temperature is staying pretty cool with the fan built on the heatsink, so I'm satisfied.

Thanks man, I appreciate the info! I just wanted to dip my toes in the water a little and see how it feels. I'll definitely upgrade to cxb if I do decide to go full on COB. My question for you is, if I were to use that driver on a cxb 3590/ 3600ma max would it work? Thanks for your help bro.
i would not use the driver with that cob that cree cxb3590. the voltage it maxes out is 36 and the cree draws more amps that it can supply. you better of going with a unit you can control the voltage, that way not over current the drive and start a fire.

You need a fixed 36V with 4amps at least to be safe if you are planning on running that at max power, not something i endorse. your making less lumen/watt and you need to have a good diffuser for that so it doesn't burn your plants. 18,000 lumens,...

Hope that helps bro. keep us informed, I'm sure we all want to see this realized.

here is what i did for shits a giggles of spare parts....chinacobbar.png

cya buddy!

Good luck bro!

Lol I'll take that as a big no for using it on the cree. I'll just stay with the bootleg chip that I have for right now. But, I sure do appreciate the help and fire prevention! I'll get a meanwell to drive any Cree cob that I get. I would want to do it right when working with the top shelf shit. And that construction you made just made me cringe with jealousy. "Oh, hey guys, look at what I did with some ol spare parts from last season." I'd love to have that fucking light bar lol

1 mean well HLG-240H36/3.3 to 6.7A, driving 2 bridged cxb3590's? Match made in heaven or no!? I'm tired of not knowing a legit 20-36k lumen setup. Am I on the right track!? Thanks peeps

that's a good driver. there is a cheaper solution but for what it's worth that is a beast. get the one with the option to adjust the voltage and current i think it's the A version. I use that same one but the 30v version. it works great, lots of protection too. you will be able to lower the amps and voltage and control those crees nicely. becuase you sure aint going to need 240w 23000lumens to germinate. LOL.

also you go the cree route, get a 6000k and a nice 3000k or 3500k, don't just use one type of spectrum, you'll thank me later for that tip.

on the right track brother. good deal.

thanks for the comments on the bar. it' works great! i made it like that to replicate the length of a HPS 400w bulb. might be interesting setting it inside a hood.

Thanks man, glad I'm finally on the right track! Yeah, I'll definitely mix up the spectrums when I take the leap into the Cree cobs. Lol imagine putting that lightbar on the front of a truck instead of the legit lightbars with all the mini leds. Blinding every driver who comes at you head on lol.
Thanks again man

I decided to throw the cob in with my current cfl grow to boost the lumens. I'm loving the light saturation I'm getting by using the cob as supplemental, side lighting. Before the cob was added, I was at 236 watts of cfl. Now I should be in the 300-336 range, depending on how many watts my bootleg cob actually throws. Also, boosts my lumens to about 23k. Hopefully it speeds up the grow a little at least.
And yes! I do love zip ties. They're in my top ten best inventions of all time!

Thanks bro! I think it's a gorilla glue #4 because it's the only sativa dom seed I can remember ever getting, and it's been growing for way too long man. 104 days overall and it's on day 67 of flowering. It's taking so long and there's still tons of white pistils! I have no idea how much longer it's going to take either. Amen to zipties!

Love the thread but that Ain't no Glue!
GG#4 bagseeds maybe . That Ain't a Pure GG#4 Mayne .
Pure GG#4 looks more like a hybrid or indica leaning hybrid and they're known for alternating sets of 3 & 5 leaves mostly & the buds look sativa but they're rock solid like indica's
Not to mention GG#4 takes 8-9 weeks (63 days tops) to finish flowering !
Maybe a GG#4 cross but not the pure strain
But then again most people think they got the #4 when they got the #2,#3, or the GG#5 !
They all show different characteristics genetically & I've grown em all . the #4 is the only one that's worth a fuck !

How'd that DIY cob work for you tho ? Maybe check out my GG#4 Thread I Started , I'm Gonna Feminize the GG#4 & Cross it with Several other Gems !

Did you ever end up upgrading or did you stick with cheap chips and get good results ?

What's up with your world today my led peeps? I'm really interested in getting into cob led lighting and decided to try it out with a micro grow using a 100w, warm white cob. It's nothing special by any means. I bought the cheapest I could find without sacrificing too much quality, HOPEFULLY! so, I bought the cheap setup to see what could be done with the 8-99k lumens of a low budget cob. Just wondering if what I recently ordered from Amazon will be good to go once I wire it all up and if a single light like this could pull some decent bucket grow bud. Thanks guys.
Don't pay ten bucks for that crap cob, when you can get decent Citi 1212 cobs for that price.

Shit. Just realized this was a 2 year old zombie thread.

Don't forget the real gg#4 was clone only, there may be fem seeds from sprayed cuts and what not, but I am sketch about anyone saying gg#4 seeds for that reason.

My Cut Is The "Clone Only" of GG#4 & I'm Going to Reverse it myself as well as crossing it with several other strains
