First attempt at HPA. I am failing to grow fluffy air-roots!

I recently converted my 2-bucket DIY recirculating DWC system into an HPA system, by adding three 0.3mm mister nozzles into each 20Liter bucket, fed by a 100PSI membrane pump connected to an accumulator tank and solenoid. Spraying 1.8 EC nute solution for 2 seconds every 3minutes.

But because I was scared that the plants would die very quickly if something fails, I kept the circulation from the reservoir tank flowing through the buckets, making sure though that the water level in the Buckets doesn’t rise higher than 4-5cm.

At first it seemed like the plants were starting to grow fluffy roots. But as soon as these came in contact with the water at the bottom of the buckets, they turned into hydro-type root balls.
The plants are doing fine, but their growth rate seems to be normal if not slower than with hydroponics. I am half way through flowering by now, so I doubt the plant’s roots will grow any bigger or fluffier, so for this grow, I am probably going to switch to normal hydroponics again. But I would love to learn for my next attempt.

What am I doing wrong? Is my mist not fine enough? Or does it have to do with the fact that the roots come in contact with the nute water at the bottom?
I was thinking of adding a screen just over the water in the bottom of the bucket, but from what I read so far in forums that doesn’t seem to help either.

I would really appreciate some advice.
