First attempt at cloning. 1 Week since cutting

Hey all,

This is my first attempt at cloning. Im already working on making my own DIY bubble cloner for future cloning, but this is what i have going on right now. Rapid rooters with Dutch Master Replicator. These clones are a week old and not rooting. I am no longer misting the leaves, but I am keeping the rapid rooters moist. Am I on the right track and stick with it with patience? Should I be doing something I am not?

Your plugs look a little dry to me also, hard to tell but make sure they dont dry out or you will have to start over. Its better to have them just a little too moist than to dry out

Do you use a humidity dome on that tray? I always do...makes it easier to keep everything moist.

Mine usually take 7-10 days for some roots to show....and two weeks for them to show on MOST (or all cuttings) in a batch. I don't use any additives...no rooting hormones, just plain RO water.

I took five cuttings from a Neville's Haze Hybrid just nine days ago. One showed a root yesterday (eight days from the cut; see pic below), while the others aren't showing anything yet.

Just gotta have patience, my friend. Also, some strains just root better/faster than others (and some individual plants can root more easily than others of the same strain). Seems like you're doing things right, though. Give it another week or so...

I've found that it helps if they're kept in a relatively warm place (like 80 deg F or so). Lower temps will likely slow things down a bit (although it'll still work).

xebeche,

yeah they have a 7" dome on them. Its Nirvana's White Widow. I had a ton of extra beans and I just wanted to try the process before I moved to better strains. Granted, White Widow from nirvana is pretty good, but I have a whole bunch of other expensive strains I want to sample. Once I get the process down, Ill be happy. Im using distilled water through this process and I have just (2) 26 watt 6500k cfls on them to give them a little light. They are on an 18/6 light schedule.

they look good green is good IMO mist every so often keep your humidity high and your medium moist try to keep some water on lower part of your tray thus incouraging roots to go to it as well be patient they will root as well nice size clone

Next time take just a little bit larger cuts ,other than being just a little small they look fine for one week

you mean larger cuts off of main stem ??? i cut way smaller and from date i clone rooting takes approx 21 days they will be 3 " tall then veg for 2 weeks then flower

You just need to be more patient and wait a little longer. It will take 10-14 days depending upon conditions. You are right to use the bottom heat to encourage rooting.

Your cuttings are not too big. If anything, the tall ones are one node too long. The best cuttings are obtained from the tips of actively growing limbs and only need 2 or 3 nodes and the growing meristem to produce a good cutting. The larger you make the cutting the harder it is to control transpiration losses. Most people who have a hard time rooting clones make their cuttings too big. If cuttings are wilting too often cut the larger leaves in half to reduce water losses. The sooner your plants will stand on their own, the sooner you can remove the dome and harden the cuttings off. If the cuttings are not constantly wilting there is no need for a dome.

Cuttings should always be taken from the soft stem tissue and not older woody stem parts. Plants will root with or without cloning agents, it may take a couple of days extra if no hormone is used, but it is not necessary for good rooting. Keep the lights on 24/24 during rooting.

MJ is one of the easier plants in the plant kingdom to propagate. With a little practice anyone should be able to easily root cuttings by one of the many ways of propagation for this plant. Observation and practice are the best teachers.

i dont see roots in that pic i see only a stem either way best thing to do is leave them alone let nature take it course 90 percent of cloners are always bothering them thus slowing rooting time temps humidity and moisture ROOT i my self will clone lightly mist tray close dome and walk away for like 4 - 5 days then mist 2 times a day after that by week 2 dome is off an i am just watering tray in a sense bottom feeding this forceing roots to work down many people will keep misting and no roots
you can keep a cutting alive without rooting for months misting here is a 21 day clone that is strong and will transplant with out any stress or anyother symtoms

Sounds like your setup is fine, doc...as most here have said, just give it a little more time, and be sure to keep those RR plugs moist. I usually spray them every couple of days, but you can just feel them and see if they're drying out...or even give them a few squirts with the water bottle regardless. In my experience, it's really difficult to overwater the rapid rooter plugs - whereas rockwool CAN get too soggy, that's why I switched.

Here's another NHH cutting...same strain, different mother. This one was cut one day later than the other, but is showing three roots already (pic is blurry, I know, crappy camera always wants to focus on the background, lol).

Anyways, RR plugs work well, but I don't think I've ever seen roots coming out of the plug in less than seven days...and it's taken as long as three weeks with some cuttings (usually takes longer if I keep them in a cooler area, like my garage). Given proper conditions and enough time, most cuttings will root in these things with minimal supervision and maintenance.
