Fed up with my grow smelling musty everytime!

It seems I am doing something seriously wrong as each time my gear turns out smelling musty even after following all the drying guidelines. This time I try a different strain (lemon kush) and again nothing but musty smell. Is there anything else that effect smell. Could it be to do with feed or something I am not adding to the hydro water etc?

Its all about the drying process, tell us yours? with details..

Could be your drying process. Or it could be poor air circulation during the grow. Or a combination of the two. Like Jedi asked, whats your drying and curing process? And do you have adequate air movement/exchange in your grow area?

Well I cut em taking all the fan leaves off, hang em till the twigs break then trim them and dry for another couple days on a drying rack. Then put em in jars monitoring the humidity and opening and closing the jars until about 62 rh. By which time they are musty and i'm pulling my hair out anyway!

Someone mentioned the nutes. I use canna for hydro and normally keep the ppm at about 1700 during flower and ph between 5.6 - 6.0. My meter does measure 400ppm or so from the tap water though. Could that be causing the problem?

Regarding air circulation, I have the window in the room slightly ajar (only slightly as its winter here atm) with a slight through draft. With one fan blowing over the canopy in the tent and the tent flaps fully open.

Not sure if this is relevant or not but I constantly have to ad magnesium every grow to stop the leaves curling upwards and wilting. Apart from a little boost during flowering that's all I add to the nutes.

Not familiar with Canna nutes but 1700 ppm seems high at least to me, I've never had to run more than 800 ppm for any of my plants whether soilless, coir or hydro.

Thanks for comments. didn't know 1700 was to high. It basically takes into account the 400ppm to start with on tap water which I've been knocking off the final ppm! RH in room is normally about 55RH temp about 20 celcius Average time till stems snap is 3 days. So question. Does anyone else use canna? If so what ppm do you use and should I deduct the 400ppm the tap water when testing the water?

You are jarring too soon.

You need to slow your initial dry down. Just because they "dry" in 3 days doesn't mean they are dry enough through the bud itself.

that must is mold cos u jarred too soon, mine don't get jarred until they the bud snaps when pulled, never in 3 days, paper bag them for another 4 days then see if they snap

I agree...3 days until they snap is fast...especially without trimming first. Quick drying seems to lock in the cut grass smell (and by grass I mean the stuff on your lawn). I would look at slowing down this initial process. Jarring should not be happening for a good 2 to 3 weeks.

Hmm, OK some interesting points. So what kinda of time frame do you guys normally experience for each stage of drying. Might help me for the next grow.

5 to 7 days hanging
5 to 7 days in a large paper bag
3 to 5 days in the paper bag but flowers are trimmed of the branches and stems.
Then in jars. Open at first (2 days) then closing and burping.

At least 4 days hang and trim, then if u are gonna jar in 4 days try and burping and taking out 3-4 times a day if they feel wet then paper bag and then jar.

OK will try. Lost all of last lot due to the musty smell so hopefully this time round will be better. Btw any idea what the leaves in the pic are indicating. As they went like that last grow. Maybe that might have contributed to things going south!
