Excuse my ignorance...but... is it possible to keep a male in vegetative state until needed to flower out for pollen? Or do their balls just burst at a certain time?
yeah you can keep (most) males in perpetual veg but they usually require a bit longer of a light cycle than you can get away with when your keeping girls IME

So more that 18... like 20 or more?

No way to know without trying a particular strain?

if theres balls that are showing it has all started.. just take a few cuts and clone them then chuck the big plant away once the clones take? or let it do its thing and collect the pollen for later use. i hear it last around a year in a cool dark place dry

this is from your personal experience?
you hear? ever tried it? it actually only lasts a few weeks and is tougher to keep properly than youd imagine. huge pain in the ass imo much easier to hold a clone.

Yup from my experience, I will only hold a male that has dropped his balls for a week or so , unless im breeding.
it normally takes about 20 or 30 days for every thing to open up, but iv seen single sacs open after less then two weeks with budding plants generally around i dont like to take the chance at accidental pollination. i find the easiest rout is to take the clone, and eliminate the chances .
