Fan exhaust + carbon filter questions

5x5x7 tent 600w MH open reflector, one fan in tent for circulation covering the whole tent. 18-6 veg right now (2 weeks in), with 3 Tangi clones , 2 in 5 gals, 1 in 2.5 gal, all using Fox Farm ocean soil, with Fox Farm nutrient trio (grow big, tiger bloom, big bloom).



My questions are, what type of fan/duct fan + carbon filter should I get to fit my very basic set up. (I am not trying to spend a fortune on this grow.)

Here is a fan and carbon filter I am looking at. Will these work? If not what would You recommend?

Any advice is appreciated.

The typical approach is to draw air through a carbon filter
(through a ducted lamp if you have one) and then out of
the tent.

This gives the tent a negative air pressure which helps make
all stink pass through the filter.

Oh shoot, sorry, you are already looking at brands....let me check...

I will add that I use a Panasonic Whisperline and it has been one
of the smartest buys that I made. Very quiet.

That fan would make an unlivable racket for me.

You also need more shove to move to air you need to move.

The filter might be OK. I do not know that brand.

Ah fan noise levels, I didn't put that into consideration, thanks for the heads up on that one Java. I should also add, I Do Not know how I should actually set up the installing of the fan with the ducting to achieve the heat control issue (carbon filter and Smell isn't really a Huge issue for me so I may or may not get a carbon filter, if it is absolutely needed I will.)
Currently brainstorming on how I can do this. .

You will need a filter if you ever want to have company over. It smells alot

The two I quoted you will be great for your space. You can't use duct fans with a filter and duct fans are not able to handle any resistance.

You need in line to get proper airflow and you need a filter. No way around it.

I tried all the no filter tricks and they all failed the mom test. My mom thought my house smelled like sewage when I tried to use onagel and she could smell skunk before that. I tried to make my own carbon filter... that was a pita and didn't work.

300 bucks seems like alot, but it is only a bit more than an ounce worth of bud. The fan will last you a while, I've had mine for 2 years now and still no problems. It's much quieter than hydrofarm. The filter will last 4 grows. So about 1.5 years of constant airflow.

I probably spent more than 300 trying to go the cheap route. Using bath fans, duct fans, hydrofarm in line fans... I used cols at first and all the connections and cords added up to about the same as a 600w with reflector. With little to no penetration.

Buy quality the first go round and save money by not having to fix every little thing that pops up.

Ive a mountain air filter...pricy but it's supposed to last fucking ages. I've had other filters but this one's the dogs bollox

All create wind noise. Some create a whine that you can hear through walls. Like a hair dryer.

Higher quality have mostly wind noise.

I appreciate the responses. Ive had good luck with Apollo brand equipment so far, currently looking at this in-line fan + carbon filter set.

Pie, I hear ya with the buy the quality first so I don't have to keep fixing every little thing as time goes, But. Would this work for odor and heat control issues? If so how will I go about installing this? Simply putting the inline fan on top of the carbon filter and direct the attached ducting out the tent? Is it as simple as that? I may be over thinking this but thats why I'm here, I need help haha. Do the In-line fans and carbon filters help regulate heat as well odor control? Or just the odor control?

Get them both level, slide them together. Use ducting tape. I like the ratcheting tie downs. Got 4 for 10 bucks at home depot.


Connect ducting with tape and duct clamp. The end.

Will remove all heat from top and draw cool air through tent vents.

The amount of heat removed depends on the cfm. I use 400 cfm in a 4x4 with a 600w hps.

That fan will do well, but it will not be quiet.

I have a push-fan in my window that always runs. It is typically
hot in my office/grow area. The sound that this makes must be
all that can be perceived from outside the man-cave. Therefore,
I was forced to either build a "soft-box" or to buy what amounted
to a pre-made one.

There is the WhisperLine and there is Soler and Palau. I am sure
that there are others. This is only is sound control is needed.
