well depending on you PH level from you water facet, you may not NEED to use a filter, I like to use a water filter.. Its just that extra step..

ya it running high 8+, just woundering if it takes out secondary elements the plants need?

As in NPK? If you want to know if faucet filters remove NPK, then no. Those are total desolved solids. Which means that you need a r/o style filter to remove NPK. Is it a r/o style filter or just sediment and carbon filters or even kdf filter?
