Ever have an HID light bulb explode?

If so what happened? Would putting a MH on a HPS ballast otherwise the same watts make it explode? Does glass go everywhere and the filiment still burn? Is the capacitor in the ballast a sacrificial to go before the bulb explodes?

If nobody knows then just write some shit so I don't get lonely

I have never seen it. Most ballasts now accept both MH and HPS bulbs too.

HPS that has been on for an extended amount of time that is extremely hot will absolutely burst if cool water touches it...
i.e. from misting your plants.... its not very nice... you will shit your pants.


I don't know anything about HPS in a MH ballast... lol i thought about it... but the MH blub is like 1.5inches or so bigger so it will not fit in mine.

ok, glad to know. hadn't thought of that. so maybe fire sprinklers are not such a good idea. I bet it was loud.

I've blown lots of HID lamps; some from sudden power loss- unplugging the lamp cord first.

Others from getting a hot lamp wet.

Some from just firing them up for the first time (860W CDM).

Dropped one once, too.

The worst part is that they all contain mercury; if the inner envelope pops and the contents escape, you should trash the whole room.

Allright hombre, you know what? I will trash the whole room if that happens. It won't even bother me cuz I got too much weed anyhoos!

good man most ppl never rem that factor and most are to greedy to toss it out since they are not smoking it so they do not care

if u use a cool tube reflector it will keep the plants protected from the mercury and shards of glass .........it might mess up the fan on the system ( if it does pop u will need to replace the ducting and wash out the cooltube maybe think about replacing the fan as cleaning it correctly would be hard ) and rem to wear gloves (ideally look at the gloves for kitchen work the knife proof one then wash them off when done )
