Edibles/tinctures very delayed reaction

I understand if you have an edible after eating, it's going to take longer to have an effect, but I'm talking about this generally, even with an empty stomach.

Been smoking for decades and have had edibles before, but past 10 years been buying cannabis gummies, candies and tinctures because my wife can't tolerate smoking. I mostly smoke but ingest cannabis as well maybe once or twice a week for shits and giggles. Maybe years ago I never noticed, or maybe the weed wasn't very strong compared to today's. But it literally takes many hours, both for me and the wife. We'll typically have a gummy/tincture late afternoon. 3 hours later, nothing. Maybe a buzz at 4 hours, but there have been times I did this, went to bed 10-11 o'clock, and woke up like 4 in the morning totally stoned. Is it normal for the body to take that long to process the THC/CBD? Maybe I am not remembering correctly, but in my youth we'd make brownies and get high within an hour or so

That sounds about right.

I have consumed some cannabutter that I make with 28 grams of flower (not shake) in 1 lb. of butter. I put about 1/4 tsp per mug and I consume about 1 tsp in total. The first mug comes about 9:00 AM and the last mug between 12:30 PM and 1:00 PM. And like you folks, I get a nice glow that starts to build about 3:00 PM. But it never really feels like I toked.

Then we have supper. Once we finish din-din, that's when the big stone hits. Now it feels as if I just smoked a full cone. Consuming a big meal triggers the rush of THC. And that stone will last for many more hours.

When I do go for that first cone of the evening, at about 10:30 PM, I still have a good hum from the butter.

Sublingual tinctures are supposed to hit quicker ... but even with lots of drops under the tongue, it still took several hours to kick in and really took off after supper. By 7:30 PM, the stone eventually settled in and we were in a great frame of mind to watch the 1930's Frankenstein trilogy.

I haven't been able to smoke for years, and have only done edibles. Recently I started taking CBD, and have done some research in that vein on bioavailability. Since they are related and both use the same brain receptors, I believe what is true for one is true for the other (i.e. THC).

It is recommended that edibles be taken with fatty food, being 4x as effective as when taken on an empty stomach. It's possible that if you eat a gummie on an empty stomach and hours later have a meal, that meal might trigger the majority of the absorption into the blood stream. There is other information coming up about how the liver filters most of it, but I'm just learning about that.

Here's an interesting article that might shed some light it --

I have noticed when I have made butter and used it in the past, it does hit quickly. Made cookies with butter and we were pretty wasted within an hour or so. Also had a small meal made by a cannabis cook who used to teach classes on it at local dispensary. Chili with a garnish of a little broken up bud. It was the cornbread though, had a dab of cannabutter that kicked my ass. I was doing tech support at home for my job, wife went to the class and brought me the food. I swear within an hour I was too wasted to work, good thing my shift was almost over. Those examples seem to be the exception.

Tinctures always took a long time for me. We have Strawberry Wow right now. You'd think holding it in your mouth so your cheeks and under your tongue a few minutes would accelerate absorption (per the recommendation on the bottle) but that does not happen, takes many hours.

Aside from fat, THC/CBD is alcohol soluble, maybe I'll try some tincture in a shot of tequila and see if it affects me faster

Coconut oil hits in half the time as butter and all other cooking oils.
Lecithin boosts bioavailability and you get more bang from a smaller dose. As we get older digestion changes and you are likely making less of the Conversion enzyme that changes the Delta-9-THC in your Liver to the far stronger 11-Hydroxy-THC.

Dispensary bought Tinctures have blurred the line of what a Tincture actually is. By definition it is an Alcohol or Vinegar extraction. True Alcohol Tincture should be 190 or 151 proof, burn like hell and hit in under 30 seconds when an eyedroppers worth is held in the mouth.

If it took an hour or longer to kick in it is an Oil not a Tincture.

I figured out 10 years ago that massive doses of Cannabis worked better then opiates at killing the Adhesion pain left from 3 rounds of Colon surgeries. It opens the clenched fist, kicked in the belly pain all that slicing and dicing they did left me with. I needed something very strong and it needed to work day after day.

I take a Capsule when I get up at 05;00 and by the time I've showered and am setting down for a bite of breakfast it is coming on strong and I'll fry most of the day. If I need a bit more a single toke or Kief mini shooter will boot the edible in the ass and I'm tripping all over again.

This oil really needs to be taken early in the day as it will keep you awake half the night with your brain on fire. (Shut up brain) I was already shaking most of my grow to dry ice Kief so making the top quality oil this recipe makes was easy enough. Google search (BadKat) will find the original source.

Decarb 240 F for 40 minutes uncovered
5 grams Decarbed Kief or Hash or Powdered Buds
1 tablespoon Coconut oil
1/2 teaspoon Lecithin
Heat 220 F for 20 minutes
Freeze
Heat 220 F for 20 minutes.
Done.

20221222_135830.jpg

Triple batch.
15 Grams of Decarbed 220 micron Dry Ice Kief
3 Tablespoons of Coconut oil
2 teaspoons Lecithin
Heat 220 F for 20 minutes
Freeze
Heat 220 F for 20 minutes.
Done.
Each dish fills 90 (0) capsules at 75mg each.

20221222_165920.jpg
Finished oil
Buds 1 drop = 1mg of THC
Kief-Hash 1 drop = 3mg THC

Do take care and gradually work up to a fun zone. If you manage to take a wee bit to much and find the world around you is melting.

It wasn't a tincture from a dispensary. I made it with an 8 oz. cup of 100 proof dark rum steeping 10 grams of decarbed weed for 30 days. Call this "Tincture Light"

The tincture is mainly for Mrs S. as she does not smoke but wants the buzz. Since this was her first foray into alcohol tinctures and her THC tolerance is far lower than mine, we decided to go with a lower proof rum for her first go round. Call this another lesson learned.

Mrs. S likes this batch - 5 drops does her nicely. I tried 10 - 15 drops and hoped that the buzz would be stronger but it wasn't for me. However, her tolerance to weed is also increasing so when we make another batch, I will use Appleton's or EverClear.

Using the highest proof you can buy 151-190 proof results in the maximum extraction return as the water content of 80 and 100 proof alcohols prevents good extraction. You can always water down an eyedroppers worth of to strong Tincture with an eyedropper of water for those who can't take the burn of straight high proof booze. Mostly just working up some spit before shooting in the Tincture will tone it down enough to make it acceptable as you want to hold it and swirl it around in your mouth contacting all surfaces as long as possible.

Alcohol melts open the Trichome heads and suspends the Cannabinoids on contact so there is no real reason for steeping when 10 seconds is all you really need. Longer contact makes it progressively more bitter as more chlorophyll is added with time passed. I shake and immediately press out the plant material with a potato ricer.

YMMV :-)

The recipe that I found online claimed that higher proof alcohol was not really required. 80 or 100 proof was good enough.

So it turns out that I followed a recipe powered by Bro Science?

I will go with the much higher booze content next time. Appreciate the correction ... thanks Brass.

Hay, @BrassNwood , wellcome. Been following you on another site. You may want to explain the additional heating and freezing. I've never seen it here and most people left to themselfs will never think of it.
Sure thing.
The single freeze is a mouth texture thing as it softens and removes the "Sand in your mouth" the unfroze oil can have. The Kief oil is really tasty so I usually let the capsule melt in my mouth like candy.

To degrade the oil somewhat and lower the speedy side effects and improve the sleep factor 4 or more additional Heat and Freeze cycles will accomplish this.

Have you tried CBD for your pain management, or are you using 100% THC?

I didn't have a great way to squeeze those last little potent bits from the spent bud. Small wire strainers from the dollar store can't handle many good hard squeezes. Adding a ricer to my toolkit ... suggestions on a good durable brand?

CBD does nothing for me and ties up the receptors keeping the THC from doing the Job. Really high THC with just enough CBD to take the edge off is what works best for my type of Abdominal Adhesion pain. I grow my own and harvest late with a 60 day minimum cure before shaking the Kief off so it is past peak THC production.

The BadKat oil recipe is crazy speedy to me and the more mature flowers takes that down a notch or two. Years of making and taking her oil has let me fine tune it to where it hits the perfect sweet spot every time.

I soon broke the plastic one I started with and now use a commercial kitchen metal one.
