I’m sure this has been done before. But I just took some of the basics I know from growing hempys in 100% Perlite with a hydroton bottom. Little bit of reaserch on DWC. With my constant need to tinker.

Here is what I have got so far. Will have my first test run under way.

The jist of it is 2x 5gal buckets stacked together. Bottom bucket has 2 drains. One for the fill line for the res ( 4” deep). The second is on the bottom for draining and flushing the rez. It Will also be used to run tubing to the air stone.

The top bucket has 3/8” holes drilled on the bottom and a 2” layer of hydroton and then 100% Perlite the rest of th way.

The bottom of the bucket sits 1/4” above the rez water line.

On top I use a lid with holes drilled like a drip ring. The lid stops that green algae you get on the Perlite and you get roots full to the bottom of the lid.

I drill a hole in the lid the size of a solo cup. Get everything wet and the Perlite holds the hole open. Super easy to go from the solo cup
To the 5gal.

This is gonna be the test pilot for this new indervor. GREEN CRACK.
10 days old.

Should be 10-12 week veg by the time I gets into the flower tent and fills the SCROG screen.

So it's kinda a auto feed hempy with the dripper until the roots grow down into the dwc chamber (bottom bucket)?
Yes. That’s the plan.
So far with my regular old hempys I only water once a day until they hit the res.

Being that this set up won’t have any wicking action because the media and water are separated.

I may need to set it to water more often. Time will tell.

i love dtw. for a small grower like me 4plants, not having to worry about pH and EC with a recirc setup is well worth the extra expense of nutes.
My waste water gets put into the garden in the summer.

Out of my 20gal rez. I get approx 5gal waste. Get about 1 week out of it with 2 mature plants in 5gals

I think it’s not that waste full.
I get the same yeilds from 2 plants in hempys as I got from 4 in soil.

Let’s me veg some at the same time.

Im doing something similiar with 2 plants as a test run. First test plant is 10 gallon hard platic pot with slits across the bottom. Pot is half compost half perlite. That 10 gal pot is sittn on top of a 5 gal bucket with 3 gallons of nute mix with 4 smaller airstones.the bucket has drain spout at bottom. I top fed until roots hit the resivor.
#2 tester is a 3 gallon smart pot sittng on plant cart with wheels. It is elevated bout 3 inches in air cause its sittn on cart with wheels. I put that cart and smart pot with plant inside of rubbermaid tote . fill the tote with nute solution until bottom of smart pot is sittn in 2-3 inches of nutes. Filled same as other pot with half compost half perlite. With 4 airstones. My nutes are botanicare tea, botaincare grow, and botanicare bloom. Also used extreme gardini g mycos when transplanted on both. Everything has been organic. Made aact teas also. Its funny cause online everybody says oh u cant use organics with hydro... It stinks or itl spoil. Well im here to say that part might b true if u dont aerate ur resivors and run off just sits there. Then ya itl b bad news. And also ive never tried hydro in my 20yrs its allways organic soil. So far with only being 10 days into flowering, the 2 tester plants are just killing it! Explosive growth when roots hit that tank.. Tester #1 is 23 inches tall and almost 3ft around. Tester 2 is 26 inches tall and 40 inches across. Just shoots every where. Heres couple pics. My flowering room is a 5x5 with 8 qb132's from hlg= 600 watts + a mars ts1000=150 watts for 750 real watts . just thought id post my experience so far. Any questions feel free. Somtimes when people say it cant b done there are sum thats waiting to prove theyre theories wrong.. 0508190137.jpg 0508190142.jpg

I've seem people reinvent just about everything out there. I've done it myself. End of day it's a lot to do about nothing. Your gpw is going to be whatever it is if you are doing right by your style. Plain old Hempy buckets will match gpw to any variation people come up with. But it is fun to tinker.

Hempy is a good way no knocking it all. Cause ive seen awesome plants in hempys. But id put my money on a dwc or any hydro system that injects oxygen to the resivor or roots. Not saying u dont what ur talkn bout , i respect your opinion hopfully u respect mine.. Roots was growing like 3-4 inches a day. If my gpw isnt the best its not gonna upset me cause id rather have quality over quantity. im just happy to pull off a hydro grow without murdering my genetics..

Also next round i wanna do the same growing method but add more blue to flower room. Like a 4000k tone. I dont no if its the kelvin tone of blue or if its the mars ts1000, but i got the mars light centerd in middle of my light fixture and the 8 qb132's are spaced around on rest of fixture. But underneath the mars where it shines on there is way more coverd in glitter than the part of plant that is under the hlg's. I like the mars surprisingly.. I was pumpd to try hlg to see wtf everyones raving bout. And i like everything bout em. But the mars has mixed spectrums between 3000k-5000k with added 660nm reds. Thx for ur comments all info is allways accepted by me so feel free if u got ideas. Thx

I did a Hempy over a recirculating res (DWCish) for a veg mom once. It benefited with the extra DO (pump on 15 min every hour). But straight up micro grow Hempy is all I need with no pumps, and external res needed.

I’m hempy guy myself... I’ve pondered this.... what if I throw an airstone in the bottom of my hempy reservoir.... thoughts?

I currently have an external reservoir that has an air stone in it and I feed my plants every other day.... but what if I added a air stone buried in my hempy reservoir?

I have same resivor external with stone 24/7 going that i feed everyday . its like 20 gal. I collect rain water. But anyways i bought a small plastic pre made hempy from Wal-Mart.its got slits across bottom and a drain dish on bottom. Its got a hole on side of pan where u can see how much water is in bottom. U can add from top til pan is full or just add to bottom . but i intially was top feeding until run off spewd out pan. This was a top cola i in veg that i was to aggressive super cropn and it snapped off in hand..so i just used it as a clone .it takes a little longer to show roots but pure aloe gel from plant . it rooted fine and transplanted in perlite compost mix. 75/25. But once roots hit bottom of the pan and after i flipd the room i thought the same as u. What if i just throw a airstone in that hole on pan? I did it and next day when lights came on there was alot more roots in pan and clone shot up a couple inches. Ive had it in there ever since. Its small with just 4 shoots. They are now 30 days in flower and loving life. Gonna b 4 buds bout foot long each.lol. feed in bottom 6 days a week til pan is topd off and other day i top feed until bout 50% run off to flush salts out if anys in there. But with my 2 bigger dwc/ hempys i havnt flushed 1 time whole grow. No problems yet. In veg i was topn off every other day. Now in flower theyre drinkn alot more to where im topn off daily. The one is drinkn bout 3 gallons in 24 hrs and other is little more. I just watch the plants cause i dont check ppm for nutes i just do half of what each bottle says. Ive had to back it off a little from burnt tips but other than that its ok. When i add to each plant i lower ph around low -mid 5's then its has a little room to swing. It usually wood rise after a day or two. Back in early veg when i did check everything. Just kept that routine when i was measuring. 10 - 15 drops of ph down per 5 gal is what i gotta add. But everyones water is different. So ya to answer ur question, yes u can add one and it did help my plants. Wil post a pic later . i no reply was all over the place but just tryn to help.

Man that’s freaking awesome!! I’m actually getting my hempys ready for the next run and I’ll be burying an airstone in each bucket! Man thanks for the reply! I’m glad someone’s tried this because I’ve wanted to but did known what effects it would have!

Yea u wil b pleased and plants wil b too.. And all these yrs when i herd hydro it make me cringe.. As a strictly organic soil grower and for all the monotoring needed. And what i like is im still using organics. Added veganic bloom from general hydro also. Its good stuff but it smells like ass...lol. . but im interested on watching u do it.. Good lucky my friend keep me posted

Hey ya'll, I'm a soil grower but I'm making a hempy bucket or two to experiment with. When you water, do you feed every single time? I run Megacrop, and I believe it will work in pure perlite. Planning on probably watering twice a day because my area runs pretty warm. Would you reccomend feeding every time, 3/4 times, once a day? Thanks.

check out the world of hempy thread

the method i used was full strength, half strength, 1/4 strength then plain water, repeat. All with 10% runoff. Water once to two times a day. You can also get away without plain water depending how you dose your nutrients
