yes I think you have to fill the res with fresh water, keeping the water level 1" or 2" from the netpot
as the plant grows the roots will be submerged in the nutrient solution, but if you have a good bubbling system, even roots in the air should receive little drops, you know, from the bubbles

the more bubbles/oxygen from your air pump and air stones in your water the better if the water temp is to high the water is unable to hold oxygen (see 'Water' and 'Hydro' chapter in the Indoor/Outdoor Marijuanna Bible by Jorge Cervantes Luck! :)

My system is a 8gallon stealth hydro.I keep it to a mark inside at 6gallons.As the water is used more roots are exposed to air and don't take in the nutes and you want your plant as effecient as possible,I just add water and keep to that line.

AS for the slimy brown roots. If they are drying out just adding water to resubmerge the roots will help.
I have been using a spray bottle and spraying my roots with some peroxide 3% and water every few days and everything is going fine and they stay white and healthy looking.

3% is grocery store stuff. You can use either kind as long as you dilute the hydro stuff way down.Bascily i dilute the 3% lil bit at a time and just keep a eye on the the roots. If it's foaming when you spray it on then dilute it down.

It never hurt my plants when I did it but I wouldn't take chances lol. They are still pretty and white and i'm 2 weeks into flowering.

You need to keep the rez temp below 68º
above 50º

Frequent rez changes
and cool temps
prevent root rot

I have a 5 gal DWC also. How low where you letting your water get? I used to let mine get down to about 1.5 gals but now I only let it drop about 2 gals before filling it back up. I wasn't having any problems letting it get down to 1.5 gals but I thought it would be better to keep the roots supmerged. I have never had what you are talking about happen. My plants also drink about 1 gal/ day. I don't use any peroxide, just one of those double pumps from walmart for like 20-60 gals and air stones.
