Drying too quickly!

Hi,

Harvest one of my plants the other day. trimmed it, hung it upside down in my cupboard and put a small fan in the bottom.

So far, they have been in there less than 2 days, and they are already very dry.

I've turned the fan off, but i know if they dry to quickly it will ruin the smoke, and i really don't want this happening :(

I'm not sure what the temps are or humidty in my room, and i don't really have any way to alter these either..

Does anyone know of anything i can do? Any help would be much appreciated :)

I've included a picture of the bud drying.

Well, you better do something quick man.

if your buds dry too fast.. they will become brittle and crispy which you don't want. Also, another affect the drying to fast has.. is it will actually trap the Chlorophyll into the buds.. which will permamently ruin the buds. They will be ruined.. and will always smell like hay.

I would suggest moving them to another location.. just move them to a place where its a little more moist. You don't want the drying area TOO dry.. if the air is too dry.. it will cause the buds to dry too quickly.. therefore the buds will be ruined.

Better do something quick man.. and hope that its not too late. Which, I wouldn't think it would be too late just yet.. as you said they've been drying for only 2 days right?? Yeah, that's not long enough for them to get ruined just yet.. but again.. I would try and think of something pretty fast.. like another location.

Good luck.. I just had this problem with some of my buds from my last harvest. Which was Nirvana's Ice strain. 90% of my harvest dried too quickly.. which has resulted in very very crispy buds. Not what I was wanting.. but you live and you learn.

But, like I said.. you live and you learn.. and I learned something for sure.

I've already got my second grow started.. just about a week into veg cycle. Still very young as of today.. but I can assure you that I won't make the same mistake I made during the last grow. That's for sure.. ;)

Good luck to ya buddy!

peace.

Shit man, i really don't know what to do.. My rooms not too hot tbh, 22 degrees outside though, probably very dry though.

But i really don't have any where else to put them, and i can't think of where would be higher humidity either :(

Are there any options left?

Can you increase the humidity? A humidifier might be handy right about now.

I just had a look at humidifiers. Cheapest i can find is 25 quid.. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/0987415/Trail/searchtext>HUMIDIFIER.htm#tabrev

i've already spent so much already though and i'm quite short on money. But i guess this might be my only option then..

Would i put it inside the cupboard or just in my room? How would i know what the humidity was without buying something to read it..

I'm also worried i may be wrong, i mean this is my first grow, so i have no idea how the buds dry.. they seem too dry too fast but i could be wrong and end up making them go mouldy...

Tough time basically :(

Why don't you wet some wash cloths or something and put those in the closet with the buds? Any source of water vapor will help raise the humidity.

For future reference, if you're drying your crop in a very low humidity environment, don't cut up the whole plant like you did. Cut the plant down, hang it upside down, trim all the big leaves off, leaving the structure of the branches in place. Then hang the whole plant up in your closet and let it dry that way. I know people who live in very dry places that dry this way and it helps it to not dry so fast. Also, if you're bud is already dry, you might think about going ahead and caning it for curing. This will stop most of the drying process. You could even put a piece of carrot of something in the can with them to re-hydrate them.

Honestly man, if it's already dry like you said, throw it in a curing jar with some (parsley I think?) to bring some moisture back. Just start curing now and open it a couple times a day. Good thing about this is you know how to correct it for your next grow. Get a hygrometer and if your humidity is too low (<45?), get a humidifier.

Dont beat yourself up man, it's your first grow ;)

In the future you might want to keep a bag of fan leaves in you refrigerator while your crop dries. If it gets to dry and you do like the message above says, put your buds in jars, you can then add a leaf or two and the moisture in it will be drawn in by the drier bud. Its just a bit better than using anything that might add an unwanted odor or taste.

The bud is not like crispy dry.. well some of the smaller ones are sort of crispy on the outside. Is there any special way to gauge how dry they are?

Most of them, when squeezed, i can still feel moisture, and the stems bend and don't snap..

I've put in a wet dish cloth hanging on the bar in the middle between the buds, and a bowl of slightly warm water in the bottomm of the cupboard.. do you guys think this will be enough to help humidity?

I'm off out to the shops in a mo, so i guess i will try and find a cheap humidity guage, gotta buy some glass mason jars for curing as well. Should i get a humidifier, or will my measures be enough?

I really don't want to spend any more as i have spent so much already and the results, unfortunately, have been quite disapointing.

This plant was the first harvested, there are two more, they are more than 10 weeks into flower, their leaves are all dying and crisping up, but hardly any amber trichs (tbh the one harvested so far had hardly any either) and very few brown hairs.

I think the heat is killing them (90F+), so we may have to harvest them anyway very soon, but this is a whole other topic i need to make a post about very soon lol :)

Cheers, for all your help and advice so far as well guys, it's much appreciated :)

Just got msyelf a thermometer/humidity thing, apparently, the temperate in the cupboard is 76F and the humidity is 42%.. how do these sound?

I've put a shit load of ice and pans of water in there. ATM were on 75.8F and 46% Humidity.. I'm not sure if i can get any better than this, and the humidity seems to be slowly dropping.

Sorry for the double post - Another question, should i leave the fan off now i have slightly better conditions, it's still not ideal, and i'm guessing the fan would just aid in them drying faster which i don't want..

That's not bad, I would keep the fan off and let the buds do there thing. The smaller crisper buds should definitely go into jars if the stems bend and snap.

None of them are snapping yet, only bending, should i wait till they snap before putting them into the curing jars?

Also, can anyone give me a good estimate, looking at the buds, how long would be a ok time for them to take to dry giving a good smoke? Will be 48 hours at 3 tomorrow morning (GMT)

Cheers :)

That seems good to me. You really don't need to do any changes , I would put the dryer ones in jars now to start curing. good luck,
Have a stoney day :blsmoke:

None of them are snapping yet, only bending,

If the stems are not snapping what you might be dealing with is more moisture left deep inside your buds than you believe there is because the outside seems to dry. That would be why stems are only bending but the outer bud is over dry.

You could try taking one and stick it in a jar and keep checking it. If there is much inner moisture it will spread throughout the bud evenly, and if there is enough left it will evaporate inside the jar and you will see moisture on the inside of the jar.

That is one simple way to see if there is more moisture inside your buds than you think.
