Dry soil

Hello,after watering my plants ive noticed the top 2-3” of my soil appear watered but if i dig a little deeper down it seems dry. Is this okay ? Will the lower soil absorb the moisture from above or should I water until about half the pots soil is moist?

no its not ok, your medium became hydrophobic. put a saucer or tray under them and flood the trays let the pot and soil wick it up until its completely saturated.

I just tried watering until i got run off but still only the top few inches are wet. Should I wait until it dries out a bit before I place the pots into a tray full of water ?

What sort of soil? What does your soil look like?
