Does anyone root cuttings in perlite?

I was doing some reading about rooting clones without using any kind of special rooting gel/powder/liquid and I see perlite mentioned as a suitable medium for clones. Some recommend mixing 50/50 soil/perlite. Is this accurate, to anyone's knowledge? Does the nutrient content of the soil need to be considered? What if the perlite comes mixed with a commerical plant food like Miracle-Gro?

Does anyone root their clones without hormones, and if so, what do you use as a medium and how are the results?

I have rooted without hormones. I got about a 50% success rate. I was out of clonex and just went for it anyway. Needless to say I make sure not to run out anymore, it doesn't work nearly as well.
