Wanted to start a new thread for my passive heatsinks. I will be sharing updates and some test results in this thread.

To explain how pin fin heat sinks achieve more efficient cooling, it's helpful to briefly discuss the elements that determine the cooling capability of any heat sink: surface area; metallurgy; and the impact of heat sink structure on incoming airstreams.
Many designers recognize the importance of the first two elements – greater surface area and more thermally conductive materials tend to make heat sinks more efficient. But fewer engineers understand the significance of the last element – how the heat sink structure uses surrounding air streams. And it's this aspect of heat sink design that has the greatest effect on performance.
While early devices consisted mainly of sheet metal components and simple bidirectional aluminum extrusions, heat sinks have evolved into omnidirectional, often exotic, constructions. But, in terms of performance, the most important advances relate to structural changes that enable heat sinks to make the best use of surrounding airflows.
The popularity of pin fin heat sinks is growing, thanks to their exceptional cooling capabilities, which stem from their round pin geometry, omnidirectional configuration and use of highly conductive materials. The round, aerodynamic pin design reduces resistance to surrounding airstreams that enter the pin array, while simultaneously increasing air turbulence. The omnidirectional pin configuration, which allows air to enter and exit the heat sink in any direction, exposes the heat sink to the fastest possible air speed. That fast airflow in and out of the heat sink in combination with the large surface area of the pin fin heat sink, results in very efficient heat removal.

Generally, a heat sink should work better when it has a large surface area, but this is not true in all the cases. The pin fin heat sink works on the concept of packing as much surface area as possible into any particular volume. One can also find straight fin heat sinks, but Pin Fin heat sinks work better than them as the fluid flows along the pins axially instead of flowing tangentially.
PIN passive heatsinks are more efficient at cooling so this means they can cooler better and weight less.

I have been testing these since late last year. Most of my testing was with a 100W power resistor. GG recently shared some test results in his thread.
I wanted to compare how these Pin heatsinks perform vs flat heatsinks.

Left to Right
1) Black Anodized 120mm Heatsink 10mm base 60mm height SST120 1.2 lbs
2) Black Anodized 140mm Heatsink 10mm base 60mm height SST140 1.8 lbs
3) Non Anodized Profile 1 Similar to Heatsink USA 3.945" Profile 7" long 2.8lbs
4) Non Anodized Profile 2 Similar to 5.886" Heatsink USA but Serrated Heatsink 8" long 2.1 lbs

All running Vero 29 4000K except SST120. 120 has 5000K Vero 29
If it can run Vero 29 then Cree 3590 36V and 3070 will always be cooler as they are slightly more efficient and the Vf is less so less power at same current.
Testing with HLG240-1400B
Ta 20C and no air movement 0LFM
Need to get some bricks for holding heatsinks.
Temperature is directly behind the COB on other side of heatsink
Tested with Infrared Thermometer and thermocouple.

Test results at 1400ma:
120mm 49C @1.2 lbs
140mm 46C @1.8 lbs
Profile 1 47.7C @2.8 lbs
Profile 2 57.5C @2.1 lbs

Looks like PIN heatsinks can cool more for the same weight. Heatsinks of same size may show difference due to Pin shape/number/thickness, base plate thickness and anodization.
These Pin heatsinks are also available in square shape. I will test square and other designs in the near future. Will also be testing with 650ma, 1750ma and 2100ma.

The 140mm heatsinks are out. They are compatible with both Cree 3590 and Vero 29.
Website has 120mm heatsinks. There is an option for Cree 3590/Vero 29 and another option for only Cree 3070. All heatsinks are compatible with the Angelina reflector adapter.

I do not have COBs or Drivers on website. Just Photon 180 Lamps, Heatsink Kits and Reflector Kits.
International shipping on pin heatsinks is between $30 to $40 extra for 4 to 6 heatsinks. contact me for details.

Plenty of Pin heatsink threads already. I keep SST120 and SST140 designs from customers here

120mm 36C @1.2 lbs
140mm 34.2C @1.8 lbs
Profile 1 35C @2.8 lbs
Profile 2 41C @2.1 lbs

Junction box with only 4xPG9 cable glands and 4-5PG7 cable glands
Use your own driver, power wire, wagos and potentiometer.

I run my fixture at the moment with normal heatsink (passive) they are facking heavy:( .
I found a pin fin heatsink manufactor in my near. i would like to ask what you think about that product (http://alutronic.com/products/powerblocs-pin-heat-sinks/powerblocs-scqare-cut/842/po98-98-40-al?c=1417)
I would like to run one cxb 3590(36volt version) at 1050 ma (passive) at that heatsink. do you think this pin fin heatsink can handle that? i hope this pin fin heatsink wouldnt go warmer then 50C.

15-16C over ambient temperature. May be even less with air circulation. Looks like it work work fine.

what size/dimensions are the square pin heatsinks ?
I'd love to build a 4 foot light bar with them, if they fit.
I have 4 square once for you. 125mm sides, 10mm base, 70 height. These are not predrilled and should perform similar to a 140mm round heatsink. So up to 1.75A passive

wow those are huge. I have to think and see if it fits :)

I started testing some similar small ones ~60 to 70mm squares and found out that with just a tiny bit of fan power they provide a huge amount of cooling power. These sparsely populated anodized pin fins really impress me.

Ive got 4 3590s gathering dust right now, was gonna do a bar build when I had enough cashola to order a sink, willing to try pins tho if you are donating.... Like the testing BTW!
