DIY Fan Speed Controller Help.

Hello all.

I am just about to undertake my 1st grow (Cree COB LED), a journal will be posted soon.

I have purchased the 4" fan below and a carbon filter.

I would like to have speed control but know that some of the cheaper options are damaging to the motors or create a hum.

Would an SCR based board like the one below work without the chance of damage or hum.
The fan is only 20w, so well within the controllers ability.

u would have to tie directly into the power cord to use that ........that is just begging for a shock or fire

that is what u are trying to make ...that design is safe .....i own 2 of them hey work great for me no hum good control and the fact a fuse is built in is nice extra protection

That looks like a speedster which uses sine wave clipping to slow the fan down and will indeed hum. I've got one plugged in now...


@OP I dunno anything about that, I just wanted to correct the information above. I've been searching for a decent fan controller too...

i do not have any hum but mine is mounted under the fan itself so unless the fan is off i would not hear it ...and it off would not make it

The way that the unit that you pointed out controls the speed of the motor is what makes the fan hum at lower speeds.

Its not the controller which makes noise, its the fan. Mine works as needed, but if I turn the fan down too much it'll groan and hum, and will actually be louder than full speed.
