Chief: water is a problem and not all of A/G's claims hold water. They say any potable water will work except for spring or well water, (I'm assuming that's because of the mineral content). In a nut shell you want water is that is as neutral in pH as possible because you're going to add nutes to it and as low in ppm's as possible because your nutes are salts. You might be disappointed in distilled and bottled water. I haven't bought a R/O system yet but I'm seriously thinking about it. At a local market they have an inexpensive water filtration kiosk that gives you irradiated water that's been R/O'd and filtered five times. It's tests in at around 8.0 pH but it's only 14 or 15 ppms. Walmart's distilled doesn't test that well and the 99 cents store's Niagra brand tests better yet. I can't use the crap that comes out of my tap and even at 59 cents to 88 cents a gallon for bottled water you won't go broke in an A/G. I hope that helps. HSA
