Distance between light and plant?

As you can see in the picture here, my light is on a can of paint right now. I just got the metal strip I need to mount my ballast to the box So im going to attempt to hang my lights.

My question is at what distance should the light be hung from those nasty looking clones.

Im going to go look for a reflective fire blanket to staple to the walls of the box to get the temp up.

For anyone who needs to know the light and ballast are a 100 watt NMH.

Thanks guys!

I put the top of my hand uder the light and see how close I can put it without burning. If my hand can take the heat the plants can too. I have a 600whps with glass and air cooling and me plants are 8" away from the glass. I also have a fan that blows right under the glass. I have no heat stress or burning. I use cfls for veg and you can put your plants less then 1" away from the bulbs without burnig them. But keep an eye on them because they grow fast with the lights real close. Use the hand method its old school but it really works!

the hand thing works but remember our bodies are at 98 degree and we wont start to feel burning until a much higher point then a plant will because they need a 75-85 degree range and might get stressed but not burnt. cfls are harder to burn plants wiht though, ive never ever burned a plant wiht a cfl but the hps.....well ive learned my lessons the hard way

Yes, that does work, I'm not disagreeing @ all! However, I dont want any additional stress for his struggling plants, so I advise hanging the light @ 2', then raising it down slowly (maybe 6" a day) until the plants are more used to the gradually evening heat disbursement:weed:
