Different cloning method for flowering plants 2/3rds done

As happens many times, when I get a plant close to maturity, I like to pick a few buds early, power dry them, and test the product.

I usually pick a bud down low on the main stem. If there is a long stem on this bud, I cut it close to the main stem. Now I trim off the top part, including the bud I want to test. I leave the set of leaves right below where I cut the bud off, and then cut everything off below this node. This leaves a stem of five or six inches. Next I put the cutting into a cup of water for either overnight or for just a short time, depending on if it started drooping right away. Next I get some normal soil and fill a beer cup. I use a pencil to dig a nice post hole for the cutting. I either dip the cutting in clonex rooting, or I use this powdered stuff to brush on the bottom of the stem. Put it in the dirt and water it good. Put in your veg chamber on 24/7 light. A week or two later, when it is growing for sure, transplant to a bigger pot.

Since the plant is already topped, you automatically get two colas.

Maybe I am just lucky, or the particular strain -- Blackjack -- is a good cloner, but it worked good for me. As a plus, you can feel less bad about taking a premature bud, seeing as how you got a whole new plant during the process.

Maybe there are some negatives to this process I haven't found out about yet.
