Defoliation and Nutrients

Hi everyone 2nd post sorry I'm aware these topics are talked about alot I was just wondering what people's experiences have been concerning yield or causing the plant to go in shock after defoliating their plants I have read alot of stuff with people for it and against it, and i know its advised not to do this until you are a well experienced grower but i have attempted it at my first time (i like a challenge) also I'm using fox farm nutes and would like opinions on this brand my plants are very healthy are there better brands etc on the market? I'm in week 3 flowering my first grow using 600W HPS in a 140x140x200 grow room these are my girls so far

Pruning is taking off branches. Defoliating is taking off leaves only... from my knowledge. Tons of stuff online about doing it and not doing it. I second the ones who say don't do it. You may survive it, you may produce some, but chances are you won't know what to compare to. They may do OK but you won't know what normal is. If change happens that normally happens but it's drastic, you may think it directly related toward your actions, pruning. It may or may not be. The only thing you have to loose is your yield. If that's not important, prune away. At this point, week 3 i'm guessing, you don't want to be doing pruning or defoliating, something you may learn the hard way. Last pruning you should get done before flower or in first week IMO. If you do stress your plant out, it may produce hermaphrodite pollen and/or stunt your plant. If your plant stops producing bud to repair itself, your yield will be effected. If it puts more energy and nutrients into making leaves because it notices some gone, your yield will be effected. That set aside, pruning, topping, and defoliating are strain specific. Some plants love it, some hate it. If you don't know what loving it vs hating it vs being indifferent look like, how can you make a logical decisions on whether or not to do it? That's why they say to wait till you've been around the block. Looks good though, should be some good smoke. Plants look healthy.

For nutrients, FF will work just fine. Next comes experience. The best grower with the worst nutes will do better than a new grower with the "best" nutes. Fox Farm will do the job for you as good as Advanced Connoisseur bloom will i'm sure. Keep it simple for now and get the hang of it. You can buy to your heart's content, but it would be kinda like buying a Maserati if you don't know how to drive a manual. The best nutes won't make you a better grower. I've seen amazing bud grown from General Hydroponics GMB. My advice- keep it simple and less is more. Have fun :)

thanks for that input I guess what you said does make sense in the plant taking energy from buds to repair I'll do some more research on it I have helped with other crops in the past but weren't mine to experiment with and they were all natural no pruning or defoliation so atm I'm just learning hands on with helpful guidance from good people as yourself I haven't over complicated things for myself (I don't think) and I'm really enjoying seeing them grow never thought I'd be into gardening as such haha going to experiment with a scrog maybe in my 3rd grow they look exciting and promising thanks again for your help

Once I'm into flower I trim every two days - My approach is to look down on the plant (from the lights point of view) and remove any leaves that are shading buds lower down - anything else stays to drive the plant engine (photosynthesis)...

thanks for trolling :eyesmoke:
That's having fun around here! Get used to it or you may not like it here!

Trolling would be me calling you names and saying things like you don't know what your doing, insulting your mother and sister and generally attacking your lack of skills......over and over and over - after this, I don't intend to reply ,,, unless

Or do you prefer I just say "Your Welcome"?

I LOVE your "tag" line - lol!

I have to politely point out a cpl of things on your ideals.

Buds do not need direct light to grow or get full sized! On a few strains of pure indica's. I might fold some leaves out of the way or even remove a "few" shades to allow the buds to RIPEN evenly!

Any way you should read these 2 threads.....

The second thing is that some may attempt this to increase yields. It CAN......BUT and the BUT is a BIG but!! While the overall yield may increase a bit. You WILL lose bud size ! That means bag appeal goes way down!

I have a friend and he does this. I shudder when I look at his plants! It's great quality! I bought it for the shops and it sat on the shelves a LONG time! NO big juicy looking buds! No "bag appeal".......I simple can not find any reason to even try this idea!

Another well respected member did a side by side of YOUR method! It didn't even take 4 weeks in, to see that the buds where going to be smaller!

My "honest" 2 cents on that topic of DEFOL!
