Deflective meteor idea

To whom it may concern,

The idea is a rocket propelled into the direction of the meteor with two rockets on the side of it that launch (once in space) to unravel a net that wraps around the object and uses the two nuclear propulsion rockets to propel the wrapped object in a direction safe from Earth.

Thank you for your time and I hope this helps,

umm... it's speed when it hit the atmosphere was estimated at 33,000 mph. The estimated weight was ten tons. If it didn't tear the net into little pieces it would drag it back into the atmosphere with the rockets in tow.

I have actually thought that through. The thing that would really complicate it is if the asteroid, comet or meteoroid is rotating.

It would be better if it was just a single cable anchored into the meteoroid which could then be pulled like a tether.

Also, I think he means "meteoroid", as a "meteor" has already entered the atmosphere, has ignited and is visible, and there's no way in hell you're getting it back out at that point with a net or tether connected to a man made rocket.

I always hoped the government always has or is working on our safety from meteors, something to blow it up before it even gets into our atmosphere. I watched that video and it's definitely scary how much of an impact of did and it didn't even land, looked exactly how I'd imagine tho, bright light and then POW!

Makes you think how lucky we are to have the moon.

Not to mention Jupiter.

Well Jupiter is just a big shield and from one direction. The moon helps from multiple angles pulling asteroids to.

There is nothing we can do to stop or deflect a speeding space rock or snowball from doing what it wants. Wish as much as you like but if a big one is coming our way we are fucked.

You mean meteoroid. A meteor is just the tail that travels behind. And a meteorite is what we call it once it's hit earth, and we pick it up.

Meh...

J,

Your idea is exactly what we have been looking for here at NASA. While I will be contacting you directly next week, I just wanted your peers to know how incredible your idea is, and that you will soon be working with our engineers here at NASA.

For years now we have been seeking a solution to this problem, and we even went so far as to develop a data mining program that covers the entire web, looking for flagged words and phrases, and your idea is a close match.

Talk to you soon, and congratulations for basically saving the world!

PS: To the gentleman who's account we interdicted to make this communication happen, sorry about that.

No... You must make a small black hole and use it's gravatational field to deflect the asteroid away from earth.

Shamwow materiel? I never even imagined something possible like that. Whats the Nasa version of Shamwow? Someone knows?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Jimmy Neutron boy genius has already solved that problem several years back......Sorry!

Pretty much very litte we could do to a big one. Giant mass accelerating for billions of years packs a wollop.
If we are lucky we may be able to blow one up into smaller chunks which would then hit us like shotgun ammo.

Why must it be saved? Seriously ... Why does the planet need to be saved? Technically, we're saving the surface inhabitants, not the planet, the planet would be fine anyway.

Scientists: Do we really want to be the butterfly that flaps it's wings toward the center of the universe?

Religious People: Isn't this exactly what the big book calls for? World ender, for judgement?
