damn sativas in northern climate!

so i am growing from bagseed and i have this one plant that looks pure sativa. well its about 8 or 9 weeks flowering and only looks about half done. but im in maine and its getting really cold def not gonna have enough time. bummer
 
I know. It sucks. I have a big bud strain that is supposed to be indica dominant, but the way it has grown this season it has certainly shown its sativa genetics. Now it appears as if the buds are taking on the same sativa properties.

I doubt it will be finished before first frost where I live (deep south), so I am going to haul some black plastic out to the site and make sure the soil is covered well with the plastic and some insulating ground cover. When I can see it is going to frost overnight, I will take a can of sterno to the site, and cover the plant with a tarp. It is going to be a royal pain in the ass, but if you have put all this work into it, might as well let it finish.

Now, if your temps are getting so cold that your ground is in danger of freezing up on you, then it might be time to go ahead and harvest. Being further south than you are I should be able to ride it out all the way until sometime in November doing what I have planned.
 
Being a rebel instead of a yankee I do not need to deal with cooler fall temps when I grow outdoors but a yankee buddy of mine will put tall stakes in the ground around his 'garden' to hold a heavy tarp and then puts stakes around his plants and runs those things that look like flat extension cords that put off heat and are used in gutters and valleys of roofs to melt snow and ice around his plants at different levels. It puts off heat without putting off light and the heavy tarp holds enough of the heat to get his plants through the night. Or at least he claims it does.
 
Im on the same boat also I had an Indica tht I got to chop but my sativa isn't looking like she'll finish....Using her and all my trim for CANNABUTTER!!! So excited!

Strongly genetic sativas can go 12+ weeks. That is why my big bud has me so concerned. Hell, all three have been flowering for over 8 weeks now, and two are definitely strongly genetic indicas. My big bud is supposed to be weighted pretty heavily towards indica genetics, but you sure could fool me by how it has grown this season. Long and lanky and the buds are nowhere near finished. I expect my other two to finish ripening up within the next 7 +/- days, but the big bud I am beginning to be concerned about. I might be camping outside in order to keep a plant warm, lol.

do you have any pics of it Im also growing big bud in minnesota it has been through a couple frosts already and should make it to harvest
