Im a newbie, but i dont trim anything unless Im cloning, topping, or its dead. lol
and the only reason Ive snipped a few in half (fan leaves) while cloning, is i read that it helps to force root growth due to lack of photosynthesis from the leaves.

People often see images of Fan Blades cut in half while in flower thanks to a few grow books , if this is what you mean by cut , DONT DO IT .. Its not going to be beneficial in the end ..
