Current Indoor Grow Questions and Future Advice

Hello RIU! I have multiple questions so and I'm not sure which category this thread would fit in best, so please excuse me in advance. I'm currently a first time grower, but I will be the first one to say I am doing it half-assed. I only had about a month window to grow because I am moving back to school and I wanted to try and learn as much as I could before I set up a slightly larger and slightly more advanced closet grow room.

1 plant Bagseed mids.
Germinated: In a moist cloth in a bag and then planted.
Planted: July 20th.
Lighting: 23 watt CFL mounted on a worklight
Growing Medium: Soil with worm castings added
Fertilizer: Miracle Gro 15-30-15
Reflection: Aluminum Foil (Explanation below)

Veged under 24/0 for 10 days after planting
Have now been trying to force flower for 7 days under 12/12 to at least determine sex.

Problems I am aware of:
I DO have aluminum foil up around the plant and as a backing to my yellow work light. I DO know that it is a bad thing to do and can result in burn marks, but I put it up before I knew that ,and have yet to have any problems, so I figured I'd leave it up for this grow. I will use mylar next time for sure.

My pot (well, plastic cup in this case) is too small.

My lighting is insufficent.

My Post is gonna be WAYYYYY too long

Burn Marks were caused by it growing and touching the light

Questions I have:
1) If it does turn out to be a female or hermie, would it likely survive after being planted outdoors where it is currently 14 hours of daylight a day? I would like to give some lucky person a chance to find it since I won't be around to see it finish flowering.

2) Any suggestions on how to set up a grow room in the bottom of a 2' by 3' closet? I will post my current ideas for it under this post.

3) Has anybody ever had watermelon weed? I've searched the forum for it but haven't seen anything about it. I got some a couple weeks ago and while it didn't smell exactly like watermelon, it did smell very sweet and not of weed at all. I found two good seeds in it and am really looking forward to trying to grow them.

4) Any suggestions on a strain that will be a fruity smell (as opposed to like bud), work well indoors, and grows fast? It doesn't necessarily need to be an autoflowering strain.

5) Where could I buy that strain and what type payment do you suggest?

I would LOVE many opinions on any number of these questions. kiss-ass I will post my ideas for my grow room below with links.

Please remember I am a student and under a student's budget restraints. I do know many ways that I could make my grow room much closer to 'perfect' with HID etc.

Also, is it better to have multiple lights under shorter wavelength spectrums that cover the whole spectrum? or one light with a wider wavelength spectrum?

Its better to have one light than many lights, just due to the overall efficiency. Of course this only goes so far as you scale up you find that the really big lights won't cover an area as well as multiple smaller ones.

The lamp you want should work just fine for vegging, you may want to find a lower temp one for flowering (2500K).

Plant the weed outside, but unless it rains frequently enough don't expect it to survive. Of course it could also do the opposite and be one of those super weeds that buds out 5 pounds or so. You'll never know.

Stick with soil for now, much cheaper and easier. You can make any strain short, you just have to go into flowering mode sooner. Start flowering when the plant is 4 inches tall and it shouldn't go over a foot tall total.

Thank you NoDrama that does help a lot. Red is the frequency that is most important for flowering and that is why I should get one more around 2500K correct?

I will plant it outside then, I just hope I can find a place that is remote and also has enough light.

I read what you wrote about one light versus multiple smaller lights, however I have seen many pictures of people that also use CFLs on the sides of their plants as well as above them (I believe this is because of the CFLs lack of penetrating power?). What's your opinion on that?

papaya, from nirvana seeds fits your description, good indoor plant, short flower period, not too lanky, fruity smell. some other strains that are good for indoor closet growing are northern lights, jock horror, hindu kush, afghani, which are all from nirvana, and hashberry from mandala seeds. You just gotta do some research to figure out which strain is good for your application. The main things i look for in a strain are: high yield, high potency, 8 wk or shorter flower period, and shorter height. These characteristics are specific to my application however, which is a SOG closet grow w/ a flower chamber on top and veg chamber below, 10 plants will get harvested every 4-5 weeks. hope this helps you out a little bit.

the space you have to work with is similar to mine although im using the whole closet not just the bottom and it is 2'10" x 3'4" and 5'11" tall.

on a side note i can relate to having a student budget, i am in college as well.

Thank you SnoCap! I have done a little research, but all the different online stores have different strains so it was pretty hard for me to keep track of what met my needs the best. Which strains do you grow? What type of payment do you use when buying? Are you in the states? Are you just using a low shelf to separate your two chambers?

i have grown dirty hairy, and purple erkle in the past always from clones those. i have actually never grown marijuana from seed. my upcoming grow will most likely be Northern Lights and either hashberry, hindu kush, or ak-48. I live in Cali, and have bought all my clones from the club using cash.

the reason for the lower shelf is so that i can free up the 400w hps to always be on 12/12 lighting and always have plants that are flowering, if i were to use only 1 chamber i could harvest a maximum of 20 plants every 12wks assuming 4wks for cloning and vegging. with a flower and veg chamber i can harvest a maximum of 20 plants every 8wks. assuming each plant produces only 7g per harvest with 12wks between harvests you would yield 21.7 oz per year. With 8 weeks between harvests you would yield 32.5 oz per year.

and as far as payment type goes, cash is always good but when you cant use cash, prepaid visa cards are good also
