Creating air movement...

Hi all,

I build these "grow boxes" out of PVC and drop cloth or mylar, then close them up top using plexiglass. This creates a great growing environment for my trees, Ficus, because it traps heat and humidity inside the chamber. Problem is, there's no air movement, so I tend to get bug issues, spider mites most of the time. Here's a shot of one of the boxes I built:

So I'm thinking I need a small fan of some sort. What I'm wondering is what kind of fan, inline? I have no idea what kind of fans you all use, but I think using one to get air moving around in the box would really help. So, what kind of small fan would you all recommend? Thanks for any tips.

You can create a really nice mini duct-fan by using a 3" diameter personal fan placed snug inside a garden pot. Seal the space around the rim w/ a plastic back or duct tape and the fan will suck air through the bottom of the pot. You could use one at the floor of your grow box to suck in colder air; cut through the wall, at the bottom. And one on the very top to disperse hot air; either mounted through the ceiling or the wall. The nice thing about these is that only the open parts of the garden pot (the drainage holes) need to be inside your grow room; most of the pot and the fan can be sitting outside. This is also how I make a diy carbon scrubber; but I put an activated carbon sheet around the drainage holes and citrus magic inside the garden pot... GL!

Thanks, I didn't even think of that, good point! Definitely something to consider.

As intake: mount so grill is flush with lower exterior.
As exhaust: mount grill pointing down, at the top of cabinet, and run 4" duct outside or to something like this. of course, with an exhaust like this it'd be beneficial to seal the top of the cab.

So, would something like this one work?

Would it sit outside, or would it have to be inside the box?

put a few holes in the plexi and a hole in the bottom of the box w/ a 4" lil fan pointed in at the bottom, it should resolve your problems
