Couple plants getting too tall for light to shine on tops, 4 weeks into flowering

I can't raise my light anymore in,'this 5 ft in height space'. I could put some cfl's up to shine on the tops but I don't really want more lights on. My area is up in the attic, gets hot enough. If I let the tops go without the light shining on them, would the tops still continue to grow bud? Right now the shaded area on the tops is about 4 to 6 inches. I got them under a 400 wt hps. They are 4 weeks into flowering and filling out nicely. I let them go for an extra month in veg stage and they seem to love the nutes I'm giving them because they just keep growing. They are drinking water like crazey right now. Any suggestions from anyone would be so appreciated.

You can crimp them over without breaking the stalk. It will slow the top down, causing it to grow sideways until the stem is strong again. Next time, you should consider topping them when they are younger. HPS does a great job, but you can get some severe stretching.

I've not ever crimped the tops over. How do you do it without snapping the stalk? I will criimp it over if I knew what to do.

slowly and gently (maybe over a couple days if the stems are super strong)) tie them over with a string one way and a counter tie at the stalk the other way. You dont want to fold the stem just bend it, but if you do fold it dont worry just hold it up with a string and it will repair itself.

so should you switch to hps after flowers appear? use metal halide for a lil bit during flower or what? If hps stretches plants then what dosen't
