Couple noob questions.

For my first grow i want to do only 1 plant, (just to get the whole idea of growing) so i decided i was gonna be cheap. The things i am buying for sure for this grow are: "General hydroponics 3 part flora series", 6500K 1600 Lumen Daylight CFL's, 18oz Party cups, and a 3 gallon bucket.

1. What is a good cheap soil recipe i can use?

2. When should i start using nutes?

3. How do you water seedlings? (should i keep watering til drainage holes start dripping?)

Welcome aboard!

1. pro-mix is a good widely used medium. I myself prefer Fox Farm Happy Frog but it is not cheap...$26.00/bag where I am.

2. depends on what soil you select...most have enough nutrients in them to last a while. When you select your soil, repost and get answers from those who have used it. Also do an RIU or google search on the medium's use for cannabis growing.

3. Hard to give a specific answer here. Also somewhat depends on the soil you choose. With my seedlings I only give enough water to moisten the soil to the exisiting root depth (Usually a shot glass or so for the first week and gradually increase until transplant). This will keep them moist but also cause them grow out in search of more moisture as I do let them get pretty dry before watering again. This method has never failed me but it takes some getting used too.

Once again, Welcome to RIU. As I always suggest to newbies Read, Study, Plan, and Act before beginning, knowledge is power. Also please click the link in my signature. You will be able to view several 'how to' videos from master growers for first timers. Best of luck!!!:peace:

Well, 1...thats a lot of money for a bag of happy frog! Wow. I use promix, only. But you can go either way. I like knowing what nutes are in my rootzone, soil can be a bit trickier (or I found it to be) to know exactly how much nutrition is at your rootzone in regards to giving ferts. For me that is. But, choice is yours, theyre all good.
2 well, in soil wait a few weeks to give nutes. I dont sprout my seeds in promix alone, when I rarely do at least, I add worm castings and perlite to the promix...put sprouts in, water only untill they say otherwise.

3 as for watering them...not dripping wet, but obviously not too dry. pretty much like said above

Whatcha growing????:-)
My advice though, do promix and 3 part nutes. Very straight forward, very basic, thus fewer componants the mess up on.

Well, enjoy. Its fun

Yeah I know. But I only grow 2 at a time so I can get a good 3 grows from 1 bag with a perlite addition. I have considered switching too roots organic but my babies have all liked the HF and it ain't broke so I ain't gonna try and fix it.

Oh deffinately go roots organic over happy frog...for real.
Its much better. When I was growing soil I switched from the frog to roots organic, noticeable visual difference in the soil itself. You should make the switch.
Now I only buy happy frog for my flowers (not weed flowers you stoners...) In my backyard. I pretty much stay away from most tthings FF now

WHAT!!! this soil seems perfect!! and to think i was about to pay $40 bucks for FFOF!! thanks alot bro!!

Glad too help, I would never suggest the FFOF to a newbie. IMHO it is much too hot for seedlings. BTW they are both FF soils and the $ will not be that much different. Also, the 6500K is great for vegging. When you induce 12/12 for flowering either add or change to 2700k range. Better color spectrum for flowering. Oh, and remember the HF has enough nutes for 3-4 weeks. I use a 3:1 ration soil to perlite. I never have to add nutes until about 3 weeks into vegging after they are in the final pot. I only do 1 transplant per grow. The first 3-4 weeks I use 4" pots. By then the roots are developed enough to go into the 3 gal bags I use to finish. This allows me to save nutes for the first 6-7 weeks. When you do start feeding, Start at about 1/2 doseage then use the water, water, feed method. I do feed 1/4 dose, water, water, feed 1/4, water, water feed 1/2 dose and so on until they reach full dosage.
