Confessions of a root bound plant

So this year a lesson was to be learned. Confessions of a root bound plant. In May/June for my annual outdoor grow, small window in the northeast, I found myself with too many seedlings. In the sense working two jobs I had not properly planned to drop this many seeds. Some of you may know the drill, fishing around for any extra pots, no matter the size, that stockpile you have built up over years of growing.

Mid July rolls around, just when pre flower takes hold, already culling males from the herd, some of my plants are now looking unhappy. Droopy leaves, lack of further growth, leaves not crispy just sad, not reaching for that Sun. A common theme immediately took hold. All the unhappy plants were screaming at me. Each ill looking plant was in a container too small. I had pulled off very successful land race genetics in 3 gallon pots one year and ended up using those pots to accommodate the extra seedlings. Now mind you, I get my soil right. I run a slightly hot soil when I drop my seedlings because I grow outdoors and I find they require little attention aside from a few cuts along the way. I leave my shit alone. I don't over water. The genetics this year wanted to run, they were not having it, they would not give up the goods in those smaller pots.

After culling males it freed up more 5 & 10 gallon pots. So I ended up transplanting all the unhappies to the larger pots. This down shifted the plants a gear or two, they flung themselves back into veg and are now thriving, adding 6 to 12 inches within a week. Even the older sad fan leaves recovered, to my delight. Now those little white hairs we all long for are bustling.

I did a very clean transplant and because I had essentially a ball of healthy white roots they slid nicely into the larger pot. This saved quite a few females this year, almost half.

I thought I would share this because in this day in age, especially guys, we tend to over react, throw shit at the plant that it doesn't want or even need, worsening the problem. Every grow I learn something new. It's a process. If you got a sick plant, step back, try to assess the situation. Correct diagnosis can not only save the plant it can become a healthy grower.

I have a method that totally prevents root bound plants.
They are still limited by the size of the pot they are in.
You need x amount of roots to support y size canopy and vice versa.
If the pot is too small the canopy will stop growing once the plant reaches the limit the roots can feed.
If the top is standing in the shade it won;t create roots any larger than needed to feed it.

It's funny you mentioned shade. I did shade the plants for 3 days after the transplant. I believe it aided the plants recovery. When I transplanted I had a bucket, literally of healthy bottom spun roots, they had totally encased the soil.

I was utterly amazed at the recovery. The new shoots & growth after just a week was amazing. The roots had no where to go, no where to grow. They would have died if I didn't act.

good to hear all is well!
I can grow five foot trees in a one gallon bag and always wondered why being rootbound this way only makes me water and feed more often?

When roots spiral around the outside of the pot they can choke deeper roots, they also keep water in.
The downside is that they sit on the outside of the soil with a dearth of roots in the centre. so they don't make full use of the substrate in the pot.
In bad soils and with neglect this might help some plants as the soil shrinks as it dries and runs off between the pot and soil where the encircling roots sit.

If it is in the final pot, it is doing what it needs to optimise feeding, which in the absence of a network of very fine roots taking up the centre, would be all around the sides of the soil next to the pot.

Nice trees.

in hydro, a great example of supplying all of the necessary resources to the substrate(bubbles) in a very small container will grow big plants, no issues. I've posted a giant in a one gallon pot showing no issues in veg. I would be a fool not to rootbound every marijuana plant I grow. I've put them in flower in a giant container and when finished saw all that dirt wasted with the root ball in the middle, alternatively now "root bound" every vegging plant and then transfer it into the appropriate sized container for its flowering cycle. when done the root plug pops out, swirled dozens of times around the bottom and sides all the way up, and twice the size of the others for comparison. I always notice my plants dont even really chute like crazy until the roots are twirling, hit the sides and bottom of the cup/container. My blue cups are see through so its easy to see moisture/roots. My one gal bags do the same when roots start to poke from the holes, but not until then
My house plants been in the same cups for 10 years still thriving growing vines that need to be trimmed weekly.
maybe root bound means "oh shit, I just cant keep up with the demands of this plant while in a small container?
for instance a tiny cup plant outdoors will use up its resources much faster than the one in a five gallon pail,,,,its root bound, thats why maybe? meh, its caregiver isnt keeping up is all, with a top feed drip timed right that plant could care less about the cup size, though I notice the circumference of the container is directly related to the circ of the plant. So I tried it in a dish pan and other shallow pots, like five gallon grow bag rolled down to 6 inches tall...same exp there but I see wider plants-rootbound too I always hope lol
