1. opponent(s) disappear as a logical argument is asked of them 2. subject changing to vaguely related idea or personal attack to draw focus 3.Impossible standards for proof are set....any emotive or observational reality is discarded. 4. Increase in vocabulary to make a simple point 5. Maintaining order in the thread is your job suddenly. 6. You ask questions a lot. 7. stayin classy.
 
How about, when your opponent cannot make a valid point, so they call you a racist.
Or a classic, when they're losing the argument, the focus on your grammar.

1) It's all about your Feelings
2) You throw more accusations than facts
3) Your posts are "liked" by bucky cheezus or echelon1k1
4) Doer asks you to clarify your assertion.
5) You ascribe mysterious powers to Magnets.

Self loathing is thinly veiled hypocrisy, never their bad, case above in point.

The tenets of debate in a persuasive context are non partisan and basic. Logos (logical/linear argument) a=b, b=c, a=c or syllogism. Questions are asked, answers draw relations, and eventually a linear truth emerges. Pathos, a tactic where fear is extracted and used to motivate one party to a logic based on that. Ethos, the debate substance is in the emotive/ moral domain. The logic of the heart so to speak, a lot of rhetorical questions, the way to doing what is right or finding that out in debate. To focus on one of the following is a flaccid debate strategy.
 
The signs that you have won are almost certain when the other party uses comic attempts to shame in desperation. Keeping in mind, the trajectory is towards many things but right and wrong is not found by acrimony. The substance is lost and threads and ideas are bastardized in such ways.
 
I am an avid reader of this entire site. I bounce from here to there, depending on what mood I am in or if I am seeking information.

In reference to the political section only;

There are a great many topics here that are more than worthy enough for discussion and/or debate. The breakdown occurs when individuals choose to flex "digital" muscle to anything that is "skewed" against their opinion. Very few here are taken for face value as a human being, simply for the fact that there is a detachment from the human factor in this electronic universe.
I know that most, if not all know, that no one goes around in public acting as they do here...not for long anyway...lol without getting their nose squished or worse.

I have seen many here come and try to start or join a "would be" discussion, only to be " digitally" kicked in the crotch within 4 posts and called everything but a child of God. Not even a slim shot at a debate or a rebuttal, just immediate playground antics and power trips. The race card gets played here more than on TV, now that, I find comical and a great way to "weed" out the idiots in one shot.

Maybe one day, we can leave the antics on the play ground and enjoy a full on debate as it should be. I know, a distant dream at best. Well..........I know of no limits placed on dreams, do you?

I enjoy many of the threads in politics.

I generally continue to enjoy them until I actually post, which kills many a thread. That or when the thread devolves in to a massive key party.

I feel like I have witnessed something unnatural and must slowly back out of the room

It seems the regrettable devoultion usually costs the thread its strength and many backpeddle, do not feel alone. I want a real signature on the debate as it occurs.

I would say that logic is indispensable and the other two optional. After all, debate is not about establishing what is true but what wins the argument.
