Cloning Inground

Okay I know how to clone a number of ways but I was wondering if I could take a clone and implant it into the ground? Would this work or not?

thats how i did my first atempt at cloning(with a tomato plant tho, its all the same) and it worked. all i did was top the plant, cut the top right planted it and FIMed the main plant. decent results, got a ton of tomatos, no buds tho lol
