What area of a plant should cuttings be taken from?

I've done various searches on this subject but haven't come up with a definitive answer. Does it matter what location of a plant cuttings are drawn from (bottom/top/middle), which ones show the most vigorous growth? Also if anyone can post a link to scientific journals or a credible site with proof that would be sweet.
 
Auxins are hormones and they are produced all over the plant albeit in different amounts. The carbohydrate to nitrogen ratio is greater in the lower terminal shoots. If you take many cuttings from all over a stock plant using traditional auxin hormone/root plug methods you can get different strike rates at differing times.
