Clones: When do I see roots?

Hey all,

I'm back on the boards after a bit of a hiatus...

I'm doing a grow right now with 2 sour diesel and 1 'cough' (bagseed) in flower under a HPS in my Homebox...

Anyways, I took 21 clones 13 days ago. I have them in a humidity dome and have been misting at least 3 times a day. 1 has died for sure (the stem seemed to rot. Too much misting?).

I can tell all but 3 have a root system because the didnt move when i gave them a very gentle test tug yesterday. Leaves are starting to yellow and it's apparent they're barely getting enough water on most of the clones.

I guess my question is, how long till they show roots pokeing out of my seed starts so I can transplant? Shouyld I be worried at the 2 week mark? Should I look for something stunting their growth?

I dont start worrying until the 2 week mark. If NONE of your clones have shown roots after 2 weeks, theres a problem. try a heating mat on low and set them on it for 24 hours and check again. Also, Im not sure of the humidity, heat and whatnot in your cloning area, but misting 3 times a day can be enuff to over-soak the medium you a rooting in.

I used peat plugs but now i use jiffy seedling/cutting mix in disposable plastic shotglasses. Cheap and reusable...your medium should be constantly moist but not dripping wet. I only mist once to twice a day and have seen faster, healthier clones since then.

The first 2 pics are freshly transplanted clones that were 16 days old. The problem with these were too much moisture, to much heat, forgot to put dome back on and they were transplanted with a small root ball ( despite how they look they actually grew and yielded pretty good). The last pic is of the best batch of clones i have ever done. 4 of them are from the same mother plant as the clones in the first pics, the other 5 are from another strain. They are 9 days from cut, All 9 are FULLY ROOTED, only a little yellowing on one of them and ready to transplant, but I let them go for about another 3-4 days with the dome off just to make sure.

Here's the thing for the first week you need to have a dome on em because there is no roots to provide the plant with water so the stem needs to be in water like a flower in a vase or in a hgumididty dome until it can grow some roots. It's generally just like a seed it needs to stay moist to germ and grow the roots but once it does it is a plant not a cutting.Try to take the dome off after the first week and see if they wilt if they do you need to get the dome on a and spray and repeat until your plants no longer need the dome or you have roots. One methos that worked well for me before is having air holes in the humidity dome so there is still fresh air but high moisture.

Thank you for the reply. I'm definately going to use jiffy next time. I had some plugs laying around and it was time to flower.. Was like oh dang time to cut.

2 days ago I took the dome off and they all wilted bad within 45 mins. I misted and put the dome back on and they were up again by the morning.

Temps are room temperature. 68-72. Humididty is low but I'm using a dome right now. I have 2 42w cfls going about 13 inches above them. I don't tihnk this is too much light.

I have a heating pad. Should I use it in some way to raise temps?

I'm wondering if it would help to cover the plugs in plastic so they stop absorbing water when i mist. Dry them out, maybe stimulating root growth. Thoughts?

My cuts were in jiffy pellets and after one week I took the dome off overnight becuase they are in the same room as my flowering plants and I couldn't go back there. I figured that the box would stay humid enough it's only 4 cubic feet well they wilted but they were still alive. Once I sprayed em and got em perked back up I just put it on loosely leaving some room for air and the next morning I had roots coming out of the pellets on day 10 I think that if you let them dry out just a little it will make the plant have to grow roots to find water if you keep em fed through the leaves with constant humidity they don't need to.
