Clone dying, is it too late to save it?

1 of my 4 clones is starting wilt and yellow.
Hi Bijjis,
Let me ask you a question. May be related. So grodan makes big cubes with a round hole. But you used a square cloning cube. My question is...did you have to crunch up the roots a bit to get that square cube into a round hole? Might that have damaged roots causing your setback?

I'm curious also because I'm debating adding 4" blocks to my system...they do make round ones too, don't they?

your other clones are under the same conditions?? How are they looking?
I put 2 clones in the RDWC system and one in another 4" block. All three are showing mild wilting with no yellowing, probably just a little shock from the transplant, same thing happened last time so I'm not that worried (yet).

To my knowledge the 1.5 inch cubes are actually meant to go in the round hole on the grow blocks. The gaps allow you to insert the cube without damaging the roots in the process, and allows more oxygen to reach the roots.

They make cylinder type rockwool, but they have an open slit down the side (looks like pacman when you look at it from the top) and are used mainly for cloning. I've gotten clones that used them before. In order to transplant them you'll need to break up some rockwool to fill the gaps to keep it from flopping around because the cylinder's don't fit snugly into the hole on the block.

Thanks Bjjis,
I appreciate the response. No matter what you clone into...it seems like trying to fit the roots into that round hole could be risky.

Just trying to understand proper rockwool use myself.

I've used 1 1/2" cubes for clones for decades but never the larger ones. Did you pre-soak for ph management? Seems to be very important on the larger cubes.
Cheers,

I just pulled the clones out of the system just to check and the roots are growing just fine. I mean I'm not going to be too upset if I loose one of my 2 spare clones, but it would be unfortunate because these are suppose to be cuts of Sundae Driver #19. It would be nice to have as many as possible.

I did pre-soak in a bucket of the same pH 5.5 solution I have in the system. Apparently though, Grodan has came out and said that they stopped using limestone in their rockwool, and they are now pH neutral so pre-soaking is no longer necessary. Although I'm sure it's still a good thing to do.

Very interesting info Bjjis. That will ease the workload for sure.

They make round plugs for the round hole.

You can germinate in the round plugs.

They do not fit very well, which is a strong indicator that they were not made specifically for the hole on the blocks.. The hole diameter on the blocks is 2", the round plugs are 1.5". I mean you can do it (I have before), but you have to beak up some rockwool and wedge it in to make it stable. The 1.5" cubes are actually meant to go in the blocks. The fit nice and snug with air gaps.

You can germinate in the round plugs.
I never said that you couldn't germinate in them. I just said that they're used primarily for cloning ( Which they are).

Excellent. A guy asking for help that already knows the answers including an intentional but unannounced design for square plugs in round holes.

What are you talking about? You were critiquing my response to another person on a separate subject. Just because I know the purpose of the different types of rockwood doesn't mean I know why my clone is suffering.
