hey i have a clamp light and the max wattage it can use is 660 i currently have a 300 watt cfl under that clamp light but would a 400 watt hps light work on the clamp light?? the lowes depot guy told me i needed a special base to use a hps light but figure the hps is 400watt and the clamp lights max is 660 so i would think it would work...any ideas suggestions and criticism are accepted lol thx

ok so does this apply with mh to?? so my best bet would be to stick with the 300w cfl's?? i mean what if i was to get about 4-5 175 watt hps then would they work in clamp lights?

oo and i did notice they were considerably bigger but the 175 watt haps have a regular socket fit

All the advice you've been given so far is correct. I'd just like to suggest that if you need a cheap hps light, try e-conolight.com. They have a 150w hps for $32 shipped. It's in the vapor tight section, and the list price is $20.

actually the lights at home depot or lowes are fairly easy to 5 finger discount i juts dont want to get any of them if they are not going to work on a clamp light u know it would be pointless as i dont have the room for a ballast hookup but if the 150-175 hps will work on clamp lights then ill get them...

they wont work without a ballast, thats how HID lighting works. the bulbs cant do anything with straight wall power. id stick with the cfl's till you can upgrade to HID's

great thx alot thats the answer i was looking for!!! :) :) just 1 more question i bought the 300w cfl i think its a 65w cfl equiv to 300 watts but when i bought (for $18 ) i was kinda hesitant as it didnt tell me what the lightage was ( u know the 2700k or 6400k) do u have any idea what it might be?

does the box it came in say anything like "cool light" or "warm lighting" or something to that effect. cool = blue spectrum, warm = red spectrum. most standard t-12 tubes come in cool or warm, i think cfl's are the same

no it didnt say any of that it came in a box that was about 10-12 inches in length most cfl lighting comes in plastic and at the top it would say soft white bright white or daylight but this one said nothing of that sort...its also a pretty big cfl twist bulb (the biggest ive seen) it put out alot of light thinking about getting 2 more actually and i do have a plant tube light thats 20w that puts out blue and red spectrums next to the 300w cfl...
