Chop or feed?

Sweet Deep Grapefruit, under 400w HPS with diy cool tube. Soil Grow.
Day 61 of flower. (suggested flowering time 45-50 days).

The plants have had some stresses:

For weeks 5-7 of flower they were only getting 10 hours light a night. 16 days ago I went away for a week and had a friend look after them, I think they may have been overwatered while I was away. I got back 9 days ago, and have watered them once since then - the seem to be very slow to take up any water now.

There was also one night while I was away that the lights didn't come on, so they had a 36 hour night time.

Leaves are yellowing, drying and dying from the top down. The lower parts of the plants seem very healthy. Odour is definitely not as strong as previously.

There doesn't seem to have been any progression in the buds in the past 9 days. Trichomes are all milky, but I haven't seen any amber. It seems to me that the plants have reached the end of their life cycle, though healthy growth lower down and the lack of amber trichs would suggest otherwise. You can see from the pictures that the pistils haven't receded in many places, but there is a lot of bud.

I think my two options are to cut them down now or to give them a nutrient feed. The yellowing could be a mineral deficiency, I may have flushed too early.

As I was moving one of the plants today two of the stems bent/collapsed under their own weight, so I decided to chop that one down, picture of the harvest below. The two main colas weigh 68 and 64 grams wet.2013-05-20 15.36.24.jpg2013-05-20 15.36.08.jpg2013-05-20 15.35.12.jpgUpper leaves on this plant yellowing, leaves seem brittle, tips curling up:2013-05-20 14.17.56.jpg2013-05-20 14.17.47.jpg2013-05-20 14.17.25.jpg2013-05-20 14.17.17.jpg2013-05-20 14.17.14.jpgLower growth seems healthy and green2013-05-20 14.13.43.jpgLeaves around the colas yellowing and dry2013-05-20 14.13.28.jpgThis is the plant I chopped pre chop:2013-05-20 14.12.42.jpg2013-05-20 14.12.39.jpg2013-05-20 14.12.35.jpg2013-05-20 14.09.36.jpg2013-05-20 14.09.29.jpg2013-05-20 14.08.12.jpg2013-05-20 14.07.54.jpg2013-05-20 14.07.38.jpg

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no expert... but I'd chop ... 48 hours after a heavy flush.
nice looking buds! all milky trichs are good... amber shows the start of thc degradation...
so all milky should mean... all ready!!

Cutting them down would probably be the most humane thing to do to yourself and the plants and start another batch. Definitely take your"friend" off your Christmas card list too.

Ha I couldn't possibly, he put up all the money!
Do they look that bad?

You should trade forum names with mtgeezer, I've seen a hell of a lot worse than your plants(like my first), they're not that bad but what the fuck at that mass of orange on that bud haha.

I chopped the top two thirds of every plant. All of the main colas and plenty of secondary growth. I left some of the newer growth in the hope of it gaining more weight (it's an experiment, let's see how it goes!). To date I've harvested over 21 ounces wet. If it loses 80% of its weight that's still over an ounce a plant and I'll be pretty chuffed with the first grow!

If the plant stopped taking up water, it's likely passed the peak period and is in the ripening period. That's normal. I'd say you can harvest at any time now based on how you like your buds. I guess you already did so good!

What I really want to know is why you dropped the hours down to 10 a day and then had the timer stay off for so long. Great looking bud regardless!

Sorry to take so long to reply to you.

The move to ten hours was a total mistake, I was adjusting the day night cycle from lights on at 6pm to lights on at 8pm, and I somehow neglected to change the lights off time. Then I was away so didn't catch it. the lengthy dark period was due to a power failure while I was away.

Despite this, I'm delighted with the results. I harvested 5.45 ounces dry. there's a sickly sweetness to the aroma, taste is solid, high is great, with the sativa making itself known. Good day time smoke, though the second spliff seems to render me incapable of doing anything but watching nature documentaries, so that's probably where the indica dominance asserts itself.
