Cheap OTC nutes

I'm doing a first grow with the AG, so keep that in mind while reading the following.

I have read that many other nutes are more highly preferred than what might be called over-the counter products, but hey, I'm a cheapie.

I saw that some have mentioned Miracle-Gro Patio food as a veg product, but it is no longer made. It was a 20-20-20 NPK product.

I did some internet searching and it seems that MG Nursery Select All Purpose Plant Food is its replacement but is sold almost nowhere.

Finally found that it can be ordered online from Ace Hardware. It can be shipped to your home for a shipping charge or shipped free for pickup at a nearby store.

For the bloom period, high phosphorus is recommended. Schultz Bloom Plus is 10-54-10. I found it also at Ace.

Both these are "dry" mix products and for AG represent an enormous (probably lifetime) supply. For instance, MG recommends 1 tsp per gallon for indoor plants and you are buying 4 lbs of it! I would likely start with much less than that.

Here are links and prices...essentially $17.50 total.

Miracle-Gro® Nursery Select All Purpose Plant Food 4LB (NPK- 20-20-20) $10.49

Schultz® Bloom Plus Plant Food 1.5LB (NPK- 10-54-10) $6.99

From experience with regular MG, if you dump a bag into another sealable container for convenience, only use glass. I found that the product migrates right through plastic (peanut butter jars) and stains everything under it.

I have no track record for these products so can't call this a recommendation. Keep in mind that all the other products mentioned are also inorganic. However, I ordered them and will give them a try.

Waiting for a "grow box" from Walmart, not for stealth but for the 12/12 period where "even moonlight" can upset things. Will post pics of the final rig.

Miracle Grow and other "over-the-counter" nutrients, as you said, are not recommended. Although, they will work, as long as you take the right precautions and do plenty of research.

Thanks, Fox, for the reminder. I figure if they show signs of impending disaster I can always use the OTC stuff in the garden and get some recommended nutes at the hydroponics shop. Then, either save the plants or start a new grow. Ironic that the seeds are pretty much the cheapest expense in a grow.

Hehe, yeah, the seeds are pretty cheap, considering...

Anyway, good luck man!
