When first sprouting seeds under 24hr light which would be better? A 400w MH bulb a few feet away or cfls up close?

A single cfl a few inches away would be more than enough. Then add more or lower as they grow.

Cfl with a heater tray is a win win situation, small leaves need small light, but the soil the plant is in is the most important at this time ...keep warm 70-77F/ 25c
