CFL light direction

i saw somewhere that more light output comes from the side of the cfl, than the top of it.

so if it was hanging straight down and a plant under it, would give less output than turning the bulb sideways?

see the pic.

Yes, you would be better with a cfl above the plants sideways in a hood reflector. I have two 105w in two hoods. Good buy on 105s for $25 and the hood with hardware, socket and cord for $39 at growurks.com

yep-sideways-try to put them in every where u can-couple on tops, some on sides and keep them inch away:)

For the sides I hang them straight down, sort of into the foliage. And I find 1 inch a little close for comfort and go for 2.

Is there any reason not to have lights under the foliage? say 80/20 split 80% of watts above and 20% below, maybe no reflectors, just ambient light beneath the leaves? would that be a bad thing? should you shroud the pots so no light reaches roots?
Total newbie haven't even started to grow, everywhere says read and read and read, so i am. Eventually i will be doing dwc or aero with cfls, haven't determined strain yet but i'm thinking sativa with lst cuz i'm sick of couchlock stone(all that's going around my city lately)

I guess if you put light under the foliage the lower leaves would turn around toward it. That's not something nature provides and I can't see what good it would do. It is easier to bathe those leaves in light from the sides.

my lights are about a quarter of an inch away.

3 cfls. is this too close?

will that and 24 hour light cycles keep it yellow?
