GREAT FALLS - The Cascade Town Council has voted for a six-month moratorium on medical marijuana businesses to give officials time to investigate zoning that would limit the businesses' effect on schools and neighborhoods.

The council voted 4-0 Wednesday to finalize the ordinance, which also affects existing medical marijuana stores. The ordinance does not apply to patients or caregivers who have fewer than six marijuana plants and an ounce of marijuana solely for a patient's use.

Several cities across the state have struggled with how to regulate medical marijuana businesses since Montana voters approved the drug in 2004 for people who are sick or in pain.
