carbon filter question

If I were to remove the white foam like material from the outside of my carbon filter would this help with the ventilation? Would I damage the filter by doing so?

Also by reversing the way its ment to work I.e pushing air through the filter as opposed to sucking, what and how much damage would this cause??

That over filter protects things from going in (like small dust particles and what not), white foam though? Its not some kind of fiber? A carbon filter really isnt for ventilation bud, Its for odor. Some growers will route their carbon filter through their vented light hood but trying to make the carbon filter ventilate your grow room just isnt suggested. I wouldn't recommend taking the over filter off but maybe buy a couple cheap inline booster fans and hook them up to some flex thats going out of your grow room (if its not CEA room). If anything buy a stronger high velocity fan (better be a high velocity fan hooked up to it and not a booster fan). mind taking a pic of the filter/fan?

It would not be a carbon filter nomore unless you put the fan back how it was, to clean the air of odor the carbon has to "scrub" the dirty particles from the air

OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE SETUP
Generally, your Filter should be mounted directly to ducting or to an exhaust/extract fan. Your airflow should pass over the pre-filter, activated carbon and then through the centre of the filter and out through your fan.

To get the most out of your kit, please follow these few tips:
~
Remember, if you reverse-mount your PRO Filter you will lose the benefit of your pre-filter and reduce the life of the carbon.
~
Always mount your PRO filter as high as possible. Hot air naturally rises and so will your odours!
~
Try not to block too much of the filter with mounting straps or hanging devices. Use the ends of the filter to support, so not to inhibit the surface area of the filter.
~
Do Not mount your PRO Filter near to humidifiers. Humid air over 85% may enter the filter rendering the activated carbon ineffective and your filter may NOT neutralise odours!
~
Ensure you have an airtight seal around the connection of your PRO filter to ducting or extractor fan.
~
Do Not use your filter if it is damaged in anyway.
~

, if you reverse-mount your PRO Filter you will lose the benefit of your pre-filter and reduce the life of the carbon.

I removed my pre filter without a problem. It probably reduces the life of the filter a little but I did it to improve ventilation. The filter still did it's job. Does anyone know the average life if you are running it 24/7?

Depending on the brand filter and velocity of the fan (higher speed fan will use it up quicker), and also depending if its really activated carbon or burnt wood/coconut shell (i wouldnt advise buying coconut shell filters they dont do as good of a job, yeah its cheaper but you get what you pay for.) 6-12 months. If i was running one 24/7 no matter what i'd get a good brand with real activated carbon and swap the filter every 10-12 months. Environmental variables are at play as well. If you go to your grow one day and smell it in the drive way i'd say its time to change :p

Morning jeffdogg! Yea shes a high velocity fan not a booster but it's only a TT 5" inline not sumin decent like an RVK, ive set it up exactly how the diagram says anyway but was just curious if I took the pre filter off (if thats what it's called) what the harm would be. Didnt think reversing it was guna help lol il upload a pic in a mo, ive got to fix it somehow to the ceiling but it's really heavy so il need a mounting strap or chains ideally, at the mo ive put it up on a shelf for it to sit on but it's only temporary for the mo. Cheers mate

Well what i did was attach the filter to a board (at least big enough to cover the whole fan bottom where the bracket is.) After that it was as simple as drilling it up into a beam and your good to go. Can always put the filter on after you mount the fan to make it lighter. Might make it a little tricky but you should be able to get it. Its recommended thats its on the ceiling, but some growers will stand it up on the ground and run flex to the ceiling to remove the air. Then some people who used whats called "Closed Environment Agriculture" (meaning no in or out vents, room is a sealed room) the can just sits in a corner and does its thing. If your grow room isnt that big You shouldn't have to mount it you can get away with it standing. As ong as your not smelling anything outside of the room its doiing its job. Thats all that matters.

Morning to you to friend :D

Lol I sorted out the filter before I got to read your message Jeffdogg...would of helped to have logged in first eh! Well what ive done is got 2 bits of string n made 2 T shaped hooks, drilled some holes in the ceiling n threw it up...its done the job! I wouldnt have minded it being on the floor but seein as the room has got so crowded I just dont have any room to spare. I forgot to take any pics of the room today but il take a few tomorrow n upload them when I get home
