Carbon filter dilemma (mismatch filter and fan size)

Hello folks.

I'm new to this and trying my best not to ruin my first ever grow. I'm financially limited at this point (went over budget) and can't afford to wait or buy another carbon filter. I ordered a 6 inch iCarbon filter to match my 6inch inline fan. I just realized that I was sent a 4 inch filter. I'm sure I can rig the duct to fit my 4 inch filter to my 6inch fan but wanted to know if this would cause any issues other than minimizing the cfms of my fan?

It will not work unless you slow the fan down. You can go bigger on the filter, never smaller.

I have a fan speed control which I can set to match the rated cfm spec for the filter. Would that help?

That should do it. Tune the fan to a 4 inch equivalent. Somewhere around half speed, you can figure it out with area/volume equivalence.

It should.

What causes the problem is moving the air too fast over the carbon.
