Can't figure out what is building up on the top of my medium

I've got 2 girls who seem to be building up a crusty sandlike substance on top of the medium. When I scratch at it, it turns dusty/sandy. Any ideas as to what it could be? I added dolomitic lime over a week ago but it was in a pebble form, could it have turned into this? Thanks
